Dexter: Original Sin is just weeks away from officially releasing and this week, those looking forward to seeing the prequel for the Showtime original programming got their first look at what they can expect. In the process, some questions about how Dexter: Original Sin will cover what the serial killer with a heart of gold was doing before fans met him in the first, long-running series.

In anticipation of the upcoming prequel series, Paramount waited until nearly the last minute to debut a trailer for the upcoming series, which follows Dexter Morgan’s path to becoming the avenging serial killer that audiences knew and loved in the original Showtime series.

Dexter: Original Sin shows the origin of the serial killer

The trailer, just like the series, is narrated by Michael C. Hall as he looks back on his younger years to explain how he ends up as a blood splatter expert helping the Miami Police Department solve murders while committing them in his free time. The trailer also shows how this show ties into the great Dexter universe that’s been created by not one but now two spinoffs from the original. The video has scenes spliced into it that call back to the ending of Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall as Dexter is shown after he was shot by his son Harrison lying in the snow motionless and believed to be dead. Another shows shows him being taken to an emergency room. It’s in the emergency room where his life starts to flash before his eyes and he then starts narrating the new series. This connectes New Blood to Original Sin and the original Dexter.

While the trailer does not show whether or not older Dexter lives or dies, that’s not really the point of Original Sin. This show will instead depict how and why Michael C. Hall’s eventual police employee becomes the man that he is and ends up taking on one serial killer after another when the justice department isn’t able to carry out its work.

This show is set in 1991 Miami and follows the new Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he grows from student to serial killer. When his urges can’t be ignored any longer, the psychopath must learn to channel his inner darkness. The series will also feature the return of Harry, his father who died of cancer just before the original series was set. This time around, Harry is younger and is played by Christian Slater. Harry shows Dexter how to adopt the code that allows him to find deadly criminals and kill them instead of innocent people. This is a challenge for the younger version of Dexter, who hasn’t come to terms with who he is, how to pretend he’s normal, or why he must blend in the way he eventually does. He must also learn how to balance the vigilante life with his internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Dexter: Original Sin also stars Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, special guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey.

Dexter: Original Sin will launch on Showtime on December 13, 2024
