After launching into early access to mixed reviews last month, No More Room in Hell 2 has a long way to go before it takes its 2011 predecessor’s crown. Thankfully, it’s already receiving its first major additions and tweaks with the Reinforcement update 0.2.0, which sees new weapons, sweeping balance changes, and handy UI improvements.
Available right now, this new No More Room in Hell 2 update is a significant first step for the so-far struggling sequel to one of the best zombie games. Since launch, developer Torn Banner Studios has pushed out a series of vital hotfixes, but with 0.2.0 comes the real meat on the bone and hopefully sets the pace and size of updates going forward.
One of the most important changes in the Reinforcement update is a wave of balance changes across all difficulties to make the experience more rewarding. However, it’s much more than simply increasing enemy health to up the ante. No, Torn Banner has made the best decision possible and instead made certain resources – like ammo – much harder to come by at higher difficulties rather than make the undead tougher.
In fact, zombies no longer have bonus health as you progress through the difficulty tiers, making them just as easy to put in their graves for a second time (in theory) as their normal difficulty counterparts. Additionally, Runner and Red-Eye zombies are also much more common in higher tiers.
There’s no better accompaniment to difficulty increases than a growing arsenal, so you’ll be glad to hear that two new weapons are up for grabs. The M7 is the first full-auto assault rifle, making it perfect for clearing out hordes while the M1911 is a powerful backup for when you need it most.
Torn Banner has even overhauled specific locations based on feedback, showing a clear dedication to doing what’s necessary – no matter how substantial the change may be. The Reinforcement update adds a new variant ending which shortens the control room section while introducing a larger area of the power plant to repair three locations.
The developer explains that this is intended to make it less about “holding out against the increasing pressure from zombies pouring into the control room, and more about traversing the dangerous and treacherous environment of the power plant.”
That’s not all though, as future updates will add even more variations to both the start and end of the Power Plant mission that include new mechanics, features, and areas.
Less exciting but equally crucial are the changes to the UI, which finally see customizable nameplates, objective markers, health and stamina bars, and other HUD features introduced after vocal community requests.
With these changes, No More Room in Hell 2 is one step closer to becoming one of the best co-op games for friends up for a chaotic zombie-slaying FPS game. However, it will need to turn around its ‘mixed’ review score on Steam to improve its odds going forward.
