Every Age Of Empires Game, Ranked
Age of Empires is one of the most enduring franchises in gaming history and a cornerstone of the RTS genre. What’s the best title in the series?
Myth Units are different for each civilization and comparing them can be a challenge. However, it is well worth trying to keep in mind which to aim for, since players get to choose between Minor Gods and their specific myth units with each new advancement through the ages, as a huge part of a fantastically enjoyable RTS game.
9 Centaur
The Best Early-Game Myth Unit
- Exclusive To Greek Players
- Population Cost: 3
- Resource Cost: 180 Wood, 14 Favor
Although there aren’t many Classical Age myth units which can still make a mark late in the game, the Centaur has always been a strong choice, and they are even more impressive in Age Of Mythology Retold than in the original version of the game. Powerful infantry units are everywhere, but powerful archers are at a premium, particularly in the Classical Age.
Centaurs are the ultimate devastating archer unit for early in the game, and they’re so good that they are well worth keeping in the back line of an army even in the late game. Their speed and advantage against any type of human soldier is massive, enabling players to win fast-paced cavalry battles and huge infantry wars alike with centaurs backing their men up.
8 Scorpion Man
The Poisonous Egyptian Powerhouse
- Exclusive To Egyptian Players
- Population Cost: 3
- Resource Cost: 200 Wood, 24 Favor
One of the best Egyptian myth units is the devastating and unusual Scorpion Man. While some other myth units have more power, the Scorpion Man’s special ability allows him to frequently poison several enemy units at once. Even if the Scorpion Man is overwhelmed, his poison will continue damaging enemies well after his death.
Additionally, while the Scorpion Man’s poison does huge damage to enemy human units, it is even more devastating against enemy myth units. Most myth units don’t particularly counter other myth units, but the Scorpion Man turns the usual formula on its head and is only weak to heroic units.
7 Valkyrie
The Ultimate Speedy Healer
- Exclusive To Norse Players
- Population Cost: 3
- Resource Cost: 200 Food, 18 Favor
Another rare Classical Age myth unit which can be used in the late-game of Age Of Mythology Retold, the Valkyrie is a fantastic unit for several reasons. Not only is it a healer, and a damn good one, which is a rarity among the Norse civilization, it is also speedy and fairly cheap.

Any player looking to dive into Age of Mythology: Retold for the first time may want to start with the following pantheons.
Adding Valkyrie units to any Norse army is a must if she is available. Her healing allows armies to continue moving quickly while regenerating at speeds most enemies can’t keep up with. Additionally, these units are solid attackers and won’t go down as easily as most healer units like Servants or Priests.
6 Frost Giant
The Ultimate Time Stopper
- Exclusive To Norse Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 200 Gold, 22 Favor
Although the Norse civilization comes with a few different types of giants in Age Of Mythology Retold, there is an answer as to which will be consistently the most useful. The Frost Giant can freeze enemies with its special ability, disabling them for a long period of time and allowing a player’s force to gun through the rest of the enemy units and come back to the frozen ones.
There is no stopping a Frost Giant’s special ability, making it completely devastating to some very powerful units. Enemies have a tough time handling Frost Giants, particularly when they are accompanied by other units. They may have less health than Mountain Giants, but they are far more useful in large armies during the late game.
5 Hydra
The Many-Headed Monster Is More Dangerous The Longer It Lives
- Exclusive To Greek Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 250 Food, 28 Favor
A mythical creature most players will have heard about outside of Age Of Mythology Retold. The Hydra has been improved in this new version of the game to be even more deadly than before. Acting tactically, players can easily get more heads for their Hydra, making it all the more dangerous. The Hydra grows more heads the more it fights enemy units, so if players are smart and find ways to heal their Hydra units, they can make them incredulously dangerous.
Hydra units can gain many heads and do much more damage with each one. They can bring down enemy armies when up to four or five heads, as long as they haven’t lost too much of their health. The Hydra is particularly strong against human soldiers, so in the mid-game, it can take on small groups, beat them, and gain heads to become even more dangerous.
4 Centimanus
The Many-Armed Shockwave Monster
- Exclusive To Atlantean Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 300 Gold, 25 Favor
By far the most useful of the late-game Atlantean civilization myth units is the Centimanus. Although slow-moving, this giant has huge attack stats and a special ability which is a huge AOE smash onto the ground, throwing and stunning any enemy players nearby up to a huge number.

Age Of Mythology: Retold – Best Late-Game Gods, Ranked
Age of Mythology: Retold brings together the old and the new, including many Gods from different mythologies; here are the best late-game Gods.
In a huge late-game battle, an effect like this can change the tide entirely, giving players an instant upper hand on enemies that can’t move or attack for several seconds. The Centimanus might not be the best all-around myth unit in the game, but he both looks and is devastating.
3 Medusa
The Instant-Killing Archer
- Exclusive To Greek Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 250 Wood, 24 Favor
There aren’t many units in Age Of Mythology Retold or methods which result in an instant kill. The Medusa, a late-game archer myth unit from the Greek civilization, has a special ability that turns an enemy unit to stone, killing it immediately. Several Medusa together can act as a strong back-line of archers in a late-game army, but beyond that, they could completely turn the tide of a battle.
If an even number of units in a huge late-game showdown come up against each other, players will need something to turn the tide. A few Medusa insta-killing several enemies and then providing huge damage against human units with their arrows is a much bigger difference-maker than players might realize initially.
2 Mummy
Turns Enemy Units Into Minions For The Player
- Exclusive To Egyptian Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 275 Wood, 25 Favor
A Mummy is an undead Pharaoh who can cast a special effect known as Reincarnation. This ability affects and damages enemy units in an AOE range of the Mummy, and if any of those units die in the 15 seconds during which the effect lasts, they will be brought back as minions under the player’s control.
Not only this, the Mummy deals a lot of damage as a ranged unit, which is a useful thing for a myth unit to be. And the Mummy has Lifesteal, an ability which causes it to regenerate 20% of the damage it causes as health. This makes the Mummy impressively hard to kill, and a very strong myth unit which will bring other units to its side. An archer that can create its own frontline of infantry to defend it is invaluable.
1 Colossus
The Ultimate Monster Of A Myth Unit
- Exclusive To Greek Players
- Population Cost: 4
- Resource Cost: 350 Gold, 35 Favor
The ultimate myth unit in Age Of Mythology Retold is undoubtedly the Colossus. This unit deals huge damage to units and buildings, is brutally tough to take down, can be upgraded to Silver and Gold Colossi to become even more deadly, and the best bit is the special ability.
Colossi can eat trees and gold mines. In a game where these are finite resources, eating them and healing itself allows Colossi not just to march into enemy territory and destroy their buildings quickly, it allows them to consume the resources the enemies would need to collect in order to rebuild, healing themselves along the way to do even more damage. A few Colossi are absolutely devastating to enemy players in Age Of Mythology Retold, doing more damage than any other myth unit is capable of pulling off.
