A new The Rose of Versailles movie trailer was released in Japan. The tickets are already on sale in Japan, but no international release is confirmed so far, but it might end up landing on streaming services such as Crunchyroll.

The Rose of Versailles, also known as Lady Oscar, is a classic shōjo first serialized from 1972 to 1973, originally compiled into 10 volumes. In 1974, creator Riyoko Ikeda serialized The Rose of Versailles Gaiden, compiled into two volumes.

The new PV shows the pre-French Revolution France, focusing on Marie Antoniette and original manga character Oscar François de Jarjayes, but we can also see a few other characters, such as André Grandier. It also previews the theme song, “Versailles/Berusaiyu”. The movie is scheduled to premiere on January 31, 2025. Check out below:

The Impact of The Rose of Versailles

New chapters were released in the 2010s

Riyoko Ikeda originally wanted to write a story about Marie Antoniette, but after Oscar was introduced in the manga, readers sent a lot of positive feedback about the fictional character, and this made Ikeda focus more on Oscar in order to be able to keep serializing the story. But after Oscar’s death, she was forced to end the story quicker than she wanted to.

Despite not ending the manga the way she originally imagined, The Rose of Versailles was a huge hit and had a lot of impact on the manga industry, especially the shōjo culture. Other major known series, such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, seem to take Ikeda’s manga as an inspiration. But the impact was not limited to girls’ manga. For example, many fans notice how some Masami Kurumada characters, such as Ring ni Kakero‘s Napoléon Valois and Saint Seiya‘s Aphrodite, resemble Lady Oscar.

Decades later, Ikeda was able to serialize more chapters, tackling matters she was not able to in the 1970s. This revival ran in the same Margaret magazine from 2012 to 2018, and was compiled into 4 volumes.

The Rose of Versailles was adapted into animation, airing from 1979 to 1980. Tadao Nagahama (Combattler V) and Osamu Dezaki (Tomorrow’s Joe) directed the series, and Shingo Araki was in charge of the character designs. Discotek Media currently licenses the anime in the US.

The new movie is a remake/reboot in celebration of the series’ 50th anniversary. It is produced by the studio MAPPA, and directed by Ai Yoshimura (Yarichin Bitch Club). Tomoko Konparu (Nodame Cantabile) is in charge of the scripts.

Despite the new movie not having any international release confirmed yet, the original
