Jujutsu Kaisen: How A Sequel Can Save Yuji, Megumi And Nobara
JJK’s ending disappointed the fans. A sequel could save the main trio.
Unfortunately for fans, the exciting journey of JJK came to an end a few months ago. Naturally, given that the series was so short-lived, fans are wondering what the future of the franchise is, and whether there will be any continuation or not. This question can be answered by looking at the many clues left behind by the author.
How Jujutsu Kaisen Ended In Chapter 271
- A New Era Began in The JJK World
- Yuji Inherited Gojo’s Dream
Jujutsu Kaisen entered its final arc over a year ago. After the events of the Shibuya Incident arc, the Culling Game began, where the sorcerers did incredibly well to crush the plans of Kenjaku and, at the same time, hope to free Gojo. While the latter was successfully freed, the Culling Game continued, and in the end, due to Sukuna having returned to full strength, the Shinjuku Showdown began. It was announced by the author that the Shinjuku Showdown was going to be the last arc of the entire series, which shocked quite a lot of the fans, given that the story certainly did have a lot more potential and had enough mysterious and unexplored things for the author to continue it.
Haven’t we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? – Gojo
Unfortunately, the author’s health issues might have contributed to a premature ending for the series, which is why, to many fans, the story’s ending felt rather rushed. Sad as it is, JJK ended things as hurriedly as possible, and the Shinjuku Showdown arc, which was filled with incredible action, concluded in a rather chaotic manner. Simply put, the Shinjuku Showdown began with an incredible fight between Gojo and Sukuna, and while this fight saw both of them fight to the best of their abilities, in the end, only one could step out as the victor. This person was none other than Sukuna, and Gojo ended up losing his life.
Following Gojo’s death, the other sorcerers started jumping in one by one, and essentially, a raid against Sukuna began. This raid was incredibly efficient, as Sukuna ended up being taken down by none other than Yuji Itadori, although defeating him was still not easy. The sorcerers struggled quite a bit to defeat Sukuna, but in the end, they certainly did succeed.
The person who ended up defeating Sukuna was, unsurprisingly, the protagonist of the series, Yuji Itadori. He put up an admirable battle against the King of Curses, and at the end of this battle, Sukuna was finally stripped from Megumi’s body, and eventually destroyed. JJK’s ending was quite interesting, especially because Sukuna was no more, and the vast majority of the next-generation sorcerers ended up surviving. In fact, fans were surprised to see many survivors from the Shinjuku Showdown arc, which just went to show that the author’s ending was not as bad as readers had expected it to be in regard to character deaths.
Still, many plot points remain unresolved at the end of JJK, and fans knew that while the story was completed, it was painful because it still had a lot of potential. There was room for a continuation, but it is likely that the author wanted to take a long break, especially since he had many health complications, and even surgeries leading up to the finale of the series that he had to deal with. Right now, it’s time for Gege to rest, but fans already know that he will go on to return later down the line and he plans to work in Jump again. The question remains as to what Gege wants to do in the future.
Is There Hope For A JJK Continuation?
Jujutsu Kaisen Could Continue Without A Sequel Series
The answer to the question of whether JJK will ever get a continuation is quite a complicated one. It is both a yes and a no. Simply put, if fans are wondering whether JJK could ever get a continuation, the answer is yes. Jujutsu Kaisen is a massive franchise and there is absolutely no way that fans will never get anything to continue the story further. But, if fans are expecting a proper continuation through a new series, then, the chances of that happening are very slim. JJK will likely never get a sequel manga. The most fans can hope for is a one-shot from the author at some point later down the line, or a movie that is either non-canon or, has the input of the author and continues the events in the future.

It is also possible that fans will get a prequel movie or a one-shot at some point later down the line. But the bottom line is that the most that fans can hope for is either a one-shot, a small spin-off, or a movie. JJK will never have a proper sequel series, because the author likely does not intend to do so.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Confirms Higuruma As A Gojo-Level Talent
Higuruma is a powerful sorcerer. His potential could make him Gojo level in JJK.
Regardless, fans will likely get some content in one way or another in the future, and it will certainly be interesting to see how that particular part of the story will be handled. Fans would be extremely excited to see the characters of Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi, being focused on in the future, when they are much more mature and have grown to be powerful sorcerers, fulfilling their potential. On a separate note, a prequel could also be in the works, such as one surrounding the Heian Era, or a movie from that time period of JJK. Undoubtedly, JJK still has a tremendous amount of untapped potential that the author can later focus on at some point. But, right now, his priority lies elsewhere.
What’s Next for Gege Akutami?
Gege Will Likely Stay Away From Manga For a Year Or Two
Fans might be wondering what is next for Gege Akutami, given that he has already stated that this is not the end of his storytelling days. The answer to this question is simple. For now, Gege Akutami is focused on resting. JJK has certainly drained him to quite an extent, and he went through several health-related complications over the last few years. This certainly affected the ending of the story in part, and for now, his focus is on recuperating and enjoying his day-to-day life. Eventually, perhaps in a year or two, Gege does plan to return to Jump.
Gege has already stated that he wants to continue writing manga and even his editors asked fans to patiently wait for his next work. Now, there is a chance that this next work could be tied to JJK in some way. But, there is absolutely no hint dropped by the author that suggests that. It is likely that Gege will start a completely new manga at some point in the future, and this manga will allow him to bring his other ideas to life. As such, Gege will continue to be an author in Jump and work on his other exciting ideas, while the potential for a small JJK still remains. Regardless of which way things go, fans likely won’t get any new material pertaining to Jujitsu Kaisen in the upcoming year or two.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
