Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, including a potential third Fighter Pass, has reportedly been cancelled.
This comes from Mortal Komber leaker FateUnknown, who has shared details that have proven to be accurate in the past. Now, they’re claiming that planned DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 has been scrapped, including new fighters and even a second story expansion.
Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Reportedly Scrapped
Mortal Kombat leaker pins the cancellation on poor sales of the first expansion
As spotted by Insider Gaming, FateUnknown made this claim on Reddit, sharing the details with disappointed fans.
“Kombat pack 3 and a second story expansion were planned,” writes FateUnknown. “All cancelled recently, no more characters after kombat pack 2. A kameo or two might make it since there has been work done on them but i dont know yet [sic].”
They go on to claim that the reason for the cancellation is that Khaos Reigns sold poorly. Sales figures for this expansion are not publicly available, so it’s unclear if this fell below projections.
If this leak turns out to be accurate, then we can still expect some new content. However, this would bring Mortal Kombat 1’s story to a close, after just that one expansion.
Khaos Reigns reviewed poorly compared to the base game, sitting at a 61 on Metacritic. Our own George Foster gave the expansion a 2.5/5 in his review, finding it to be too short for the price, and not enjoying the focus on the multiverse. Fans don’t seem pleased with it either, as it has a user score of 4.2/10.
Whatever happens with Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC, we know that we’ll see more from the series. This was confirmed earlier this month, when Warner Bros. said that it’s focussing on four IPs in its gaming endeavours: Mortal Kombat, Batman, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. We’ll just have to wait and see what this means for the Mortal Kombat series.
Mortal Kombat 1 reboots the popular fighting game’s universe, following Liu Kang’s altering of the events of Mortal Kombat 11. It features a broad range of fighters, an expanded story, and the all-new Kameo fighter system.
