Idris Elba In Line For Masters Of The Universe Role
The Wrap recently reported that Elba is in line to take on the role of Man-At-Arms in the new Masters of the Universe reboot. The character was known originally as the Master of Weapons for the kingdom that Prince Adam (aka He-Man) and his family ruled over during a time of peace before Skeletor tried to rip everything apart. Man-At-Arms is a genius inventor that comes from a family of warriors and inventors that passed down their genius through genetics and their special weapons building through plans and diaries over the generations. In Masters of the Universe lore, Man-At-Arms has always served as Prince Adam’s mentor and captain of the royal guard. He’s also one of the most loyal partners in battle against Skeletor when He-Man calls on his companions to help fight off the forces of evil and defend Castle Greyskull.
Should Elba does sign on the dotted line, he’ll join a growing cast of well known actors. While he’s slated to take on the role of Man-At-Arms, he’ll join Nicholas Galitzine in the role of He-Man, Camila Mendes, who is playing Teela (who is Man-At-Arms daughter), and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn. Brie’s character is apparently the first villain in the Masters of the Universe movie to get cast. Evil-Lyn is an evil sorceress who serves as a kind of right-hand woman to Skeletor. So far, there’s no mention as to who will take up the role of the movie’s big bad.
The Mattel toy company first introduced He-Man in 1982 with the launch of a toy line (dubbed Masters of the Universe) and the launch of the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The original cartoon ran in a very different era of television where it lasted just two seasons but had 130 episodes showing He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Teela, The Sorceress and Orko (as mostly comic relief) taking on Skeletor, Beast-Man and Evil-Lyn as their primary rivals.
Even if he does make it official with Masters of the Universe, Elba is going to be plenty busy before that film goes into production. Next up for veteran actor is the second season of Apple’s Hijack, followed by Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and several other projects already on the books.
