Scooper DanielRPK reports that Jackman will continue playing Wolverine after Avengers: Secret Wars. According to DanielRPK, one project featuring Jackman as Wolverine could be a sequel to Deadpool and Wolverine. DanielRPK is not the only one to report on Marvel Studios’ interest in Deadpool and Wolverine 2, as scooper MyTimeToShineHello recently stated Marvel Studios wants to release such a sequel after Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s important to note that this information has not been officially confirmed.
It’s unsurprising to hear Marvel Studios is interested in making Deadpool and Wolverine 2. While 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a box office and critical success, Ant-Man 3 and The Marvels flopped on both fronts that year. Marvel Studios’ woes continued with the overwhelmingly negative reactions to its Secret Wars series for Disney Plus. Deadpool and Wolverine was a hit for audiences and a return to box office glory for Marvel Studios, crossing $1 billion worldwide. Still, some fans might be disappointed to hear the MCU isn’t moving on.
Because Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to reboot the MCU, fans suspect this would be an opportunity to recast the X-Men and potentially create a version of the MCU where mutants existed from the beginning. This would provide a reasonable (by comic book standards) explanation for why a group as prominent as mutants and the X-Men are never seen or mentioned in the MCU. Kevin Feige’s comments on a new X-Men era after Avengers: Secret Wars seemingly hinted at this idea being true. While most actors from the Fox X-Men movies are well-regarded by fans, some hoped to see a new incarnation of the team.
That is not to say fans are upset to see Jackman continue playing Wolverine. Seeing Jackman’s Wolverine interact with the MCU characters is potentially exciting. But some fans are ready to move on instead of clinging to the Fox era. The Fantastic Four characters are being recast for the MCU. Why not the X-Men?
Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.
Avengers: Secret Wars is the sixth Avengers film and it takes place during phase six of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. In the movie, several heroes from the prior phases return and battle against a cosmic threat to rival Thanos, and it borrows elements of the Marvel Comics event of the same name.
