God of War Ragnarok isn’t just a cookie-cutter sequel to the award-winning 2018 title — it builds upon its predecessor with numerous improvements. One common criticism of God of War (2018) was its lack of mini-boss encounters, a shortcoming the sequel went above and beyond to solve.

God of War Ragnarok: Do This To Make Crucible Challenges Much Easier

God of War Ragnarok features an abundance of mini-bosses. In fact, there are so many that the developers decided to hide a few from most players. To uncover these hidden bosses, you’ll need a special gadget: the Mystical Heirloom. The guide below explains everything you need to know about the Mystical Heirloom, including where to find it, how to use it, and what it unlocks.
Where Is Mystical Heirloom Located In God of War Ragnarok?
After completing the main mission “Forging Destiny,” you’ll gain access to a new tool: the Draupnir Spear. This versatile weapon serves multiple purposes in the game, including unlocking new pathways.
With the spear in hand, fast-travel back to Midgard, specifically to the Lake of Nine area. Head to the southern side of Tyr’s Temple. Use the above image to get your bearings. There, you’ll find a path blocked by ice with a yellow weak point. The Draupnir Spear tutorial should have shown you what to do: throw the spear at the weak point and detonate it to clear the ice.
Once the path is open, head inside and look to your left. You’ll discover a tragic scene — a dead dwarf, a scroll, and a mysterious item on the ground. Pick them up. The item in question is the Mystical Heirloom.

What Does Mystical Heirloom Do In God of War Ragnarok?
Once you’ve obtained the Mystical Heirloom relic, you might wonder what it actually does. The in-game description reads, “Awakens something dormant, deep down inside of the bearer” — which isn’t exactly clear. The Mystical Heirloom has a cooldown of 17 seconds, doesn’t appear to have any immediate effects when used, and unlike other relics, it cannot be upgraded.
Its in-game info might leave you scratching your head: “It seems important, but doesn’t seem to have any practical application in combat.”
The Mystical Heirloom is used to awaken Frozen Trolls you may have encountered during your journey. These are optional bosses you can challenge. The relic can also awaken one Frozen Dragon. In total, there are four Frozen Trolls and one Frozen Dragon that the Mystical Heirloom can bring to life. Once you’ve used the relic to awaken these dormant foes, you can safely unequip it, as there’s no further need for it afterward.

God of War Ragnarok Releases New PS5 Update for November 2024
Sony Santa Monica releases a new God of War Ragnarok update for PS5, introducing several fixes and implementing a long-awaited change.
Where Are Frozen Trolls Located in God of War Ragnarok?
Now that you have the Mystical Heirloom and understand its purpose, your next task is to locate all four Frozen Trolls and defeat them. Not only will you earn additional loot and bragging rights, but these fights are also incredibly enjoyable. So, seek them out just for the thrill of battle.
Frozen Troll In Midgard (Blodugr Steinn)
The first Frozen Troll can be found in Midgard, so there’s no need to fast travel. Hop back on your sled and head to the Derelict Outpost, located in the bottom-left section of the Lake of Nine region. Use the provided image for reference if needed.
When you arrive, climb the chain to reach Sindri’s shop. Continue forward until you enter an open area, where you’ll spot the first Frozen Troll. Approach it and use the Mystical Heirloom to awaken it.
This troll, named Blodugr Steinn, isn’t too challenging as it has a limited set of moves. However, be cautious of its pillar attacks. The Draupnir Spear is particularly effective in this fight, as it can disrupt the troll’s attacks and stagger it.

A God of War Remastered Collection Could Stand Out From the PS3 Version in One Way
Since God of War 3 has already been remastered for the PS3, there is one thing a God of War Remastered collection could do to distinguish itself.
Frozen Troll In Alfheim (Bjarg Storm)
The second Frozen Troll is located in the realm of elves, Alfheim. After defeating your first Frozen Troll, head to the nearest Mystic Gateway and fast-travel to Alfheim. The troll is in the southwestern corner of the Forgotten Sands region. Use the map image for the exact location.
Approach the troll and use the Mystical Heirloom again to awaken it. This troll, named Bjarg Storm, isn’t particularly challenging. With persistence and some well-timed attacks, you should be able to defeat him after a few attempts.
Frozen Trolls In Vanaheim (Golrab Of The Ashes & Golrab Of Frost)
The final two Frozen Trolls are located in Vanaheim. Return to the nearest Mystic Gateway and fast travel to the realm of the Vanir. These trolls can be found in Noatun’s Garden, which is south of Freyr’s Camp. Hop on your boat and head to the location marked on the map.
Here, you’ll face two Frozen Trolls: Golrab of the Ashes and Golrab of Frost. You know the drill at this point — get close to them and use the Mystical Relic to awaken them. This encounter will be the most challenging so far. The trolls can gang up on you, and their dirt-throwing attack can blind you. However, the real difficulty lies in their elemental resistance:
Using an element the trolls are immune to will cause that same element to be applied to Kratos, so don’t do that.
TIPS TO DEFEAT BOTH TROLLS:
- Focus on One Troll: Don’t split your attention. Concentrate on eliminating one troll first.
- Use Runic Attacks Early: The moment the trolls unfreeze, unleash both your Runic Attacks on one target to gain an early advantage.
- Switch Weapons Strategically: Alternate between the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear as needed.
- Avoid Greed: Play cautiously and prioritize survival over aggression.
Even experienced players may need a few tries to conquer this fight. Patience is key.

God of War (2018) and its sequel, God of War Ragnarok, both received cuts involving enemies and a significant questline before their final release.
Where Is The Frozen Dragon Located In God of War Ragnarok
The four Frozen Trolls aren’t the only enemies you can awaken with the Mystical Heirloom. There’s also a hidden dragon fight waiting for you in the realm of the dwarves, Svartalfheim.
Fast travel to Svartalfheim and head to the aptly named Dragon Beach. Clear out the regular enemies in the area first, then locate the frozen dragon perched on top of a rock. Use the Mystical Heirloom to awaken the Everlasting Dragon and prepare for a challenging battle.
This dragon will be the toughest foe among all the frozen bosses. To even the odds, look for the giant fire rocks scattered around the arena. Chuck these rocks at the dragon whenever possible to deal massive damage and create openings. Stay mobile and use ranged attacks effectively.

What God of War’s New Showrunner Could Mean For The Amazon Series
Amazon’s God of War has gained a new showrunner which could signal a big change to the TV series.
Rewards For Defeating Frozen Mini-Bosses
Slumber Stone For Steinbjorn Armor Set
Defeating each Frozen Troll rewards you with a Slumber Stone, a unique resource required to craft the Steinbjorn Armor Set. This set is among the best defensive armors in the game, allowing Kratos to endure significant damage. To craft the full set, you’ll need four Slumber Stones, and defeating all four trolls provides exactly that. Alongside the Slumber Stones, you’ll also receive some generic crafting resources.
Dragon Claw fFor Dragon Scale Armor Set
On the other hand, defeating the Frozen Dragon doesn’t yield a Slumber Stone. Instead, you’ll receive three Dragon Claws, a rare material used to craft or upgrade the Dragon Scale Armor Set. Additionally, you’ll be rewarded with the Jotunheim’s Force Enchantment and more generic resources.
Both armor sets are powerful and well worth the effort of taking down these hidden bosses.
