From Season 3: Monster Theories Explained

From Season 3: Monster Theories Explained

There is a show on MGM+ that is very popular within its fanbase, and yet has silently flown under the radar with broader audiences despite being perfect for fans of the sci-fi horror genre. That is the show FROM. The show is centered around a group of people who have all found themselves trapped inside a small town that has been abandoned and seems to be accessible from points across the United States. In addition to the supernatural elements keeping the people trapped in this town, there is one major threat that also keeps the town and its people afraid and forced to hide. These are mysterious humanoid beings simply called the Monsters.

These creatures come under the guise of creepy, smiling men and women with pale skin, who transform into teeth-barring creatures when they corner a victim. The origins and abilities of these creatures has been one of the fandom’s greatest questions since season one. Now going into season three, there seem to be more questions than answers. Yet, recent episodes have teased possible revelations. The creators have also made claims that anyone who figures out the true nature of the monsters will instantly know the entire mystery and story behind FROM altogether. With that in mind, now is the time to go through some of the biggest theories concerning these monsters.

FROM, Explained

The show began in 2022 on EPIX, and the network (since changed to MGM+) took on the show to widespread acclaim, receiving praise for its stellar writing, acting and the overall mystery. The show takes place in a nightmarish mystery town that traps anyone who finds themselves traveling through, no matter where in the United States they were traveling in. It always begins with a downed tree forcing them to take a detour, and leaves them trapped in a town in which the roads loop back around to the town center.

The survivors are led by Boyd, a retired US Army vet and the self-appointed sheriff of the town, who was trapped in the town alongside his son Ellis and his wife Abby. A small sub-sect of the survivors live in a big home known as Colony House, and are led by Donna. During the day, the town works to survive and investigate the many mysteries that have embedded themselves into the fabric of the town. At night, the people hide in their homes and other buildings using talismans that Boyd discovered in the woods to keep the deadly monsters at bay.

The monsters may be one of the longest running mysteries in the town. The creatures emerge from the surrounding woods at night, traveling and posing as ordinary, albeit creepy, smiling people who laugh and try to trick people into opening their doors to them. The second someone does, their faces contort and turn into the monsters they’ve always been. That was the routine for much of the show. However, the second season introduced a shocking twist that allowed Boyd to confront one of the main creatures one-on-one, and the creatures have become more proactive in trying to trick the townspeople out of their homes.

The Monsters Theories, Explained

Nothing has been confirmed yet regarding the origins or inspirations for the monsters, but many fans have sleuthed their way through the show’s history thus far, and there are many compelling monster theories out there. Some are quite common and popular theories for a multitude of shows in this genre, such as bloodthirsty vampires (due to only coming out at night and the cannibalistic aspect of their behavior). Another theory is that the monsters are demons, and Fromville is some sort of hellish dimension. However, there are two more interesting theories out there that might explain the creatures.

The first theory is that Fromville is a limbo-like dimension for those who have either died or fallen into a coma of some sort, and the creatures are Leviathan. Leviathans have had many depictions in ancient cultures and religions over the years, even becoming a primary antagonist in the hit show Supernatural. They are also depicted as serpents-like beings who serve chaos, and take the souls of humanity if they fail to pass into either heaven or hell.

Another big theory that may hold weight is that the creatures are fae, or faeries of ancient lore. One of the main pieces of evidence behind this theory is the talismans. Many of the beliefs surrounding fairies tell of ways to ward them off, including cold iron and offerings to keep the fae from entering one’s home. Another thing that many connect the monsters and the fae to is something called the will o’ the wisps. In mythology, this refers to a bright light that a fairy would use to lure travelers off the beaten path, which the downed tree in FROM may represent. The interesting thing is that, in Norse mythology in particular, the fairies are considered to be elemental spirits that serve the Vanir, Norse gods associated with fertility, magic, and seeing into the future. These are all elements that the show has played with.

While the answers may elude fans until the show’s finale (much like Lost did), having a chilling, terrifying creature set like the Monsters gives the high stakes and the tension found on the show meaning and purpose. The true origins of these creatures may reveal the entire story behind the show once they are discovered. With only two episodes left before the Season 3 finale, fans may discover the answers sooner rather than later. Of course, with this show, one answer may lead to five more questions.
