Typically in RPGs, Thief classes are given a skill called Steal. For example, the first Final Fantasy has a Thief class and it can steal from enemies using this command. In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, their Thief class, or Vocation, can steal from enemies but nontraditionally. Stealing is an automatic command that may or may not happen after battle.

There are a ton of new and old gameplay features in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Here’s what new players need to know when starting their adventure.
There is no manual way to steal from an enemy, but that said, this skill does make the Thief a useful Vocation in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. It’s one of the best ways to get rare equipment. What other abilities and skills are worthwhile for the Thief? Let’s find out and rank their usefulness.
7 Snoop
Look For Treasure In The Area
Thieves can learn two types of treasure-hunting abilities as they progress. Snoop is a later one that can reveal if an area has a treasure in it. Nose for Treasure similarly sniffs out treasure but in a weaker sense. If players know there is treasure to loot, they may spend extra time exploring. It can be a waste to walk around certain regions of a dungeon otherwise especially since Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake still uses random encounters as an old-school RPG mechanic.
6 Sandstorm
All Enemies Loose Accuracy
Thieves are definitely not one of the hardest-hitting Vocations in the game. However, they can do a lot of good by debuffing enemies with various skills. For example, Sandstorm will target all enemies and lower their accuracy.

There are several side quests that players should complete early on in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Here’s which ones not to skip.
If an enemy cannot hit anyone, then this ability is like giving the entire party a defensive boost. PC modders out there would be wise to add in a sound effect whenever Sandstorm is used in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake like Dale Gribble from King of the Hill screaming “Pocket Sand!”
Avoid Random Encounters
Padfoot is one of the best exploration abilities in the game right next to Zoom. It can reduce the encounter rate of enemies. There are similar spells like this in the game including Holy Protection with the hero Vocation in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. However, the accuracy of Padfoot is more successful and Thieves can learn it slightly faster. Not every player is going to want to encounter enemies on a constant loop especially randomly which is why abilities like Padfoot are essential.
4 Assassin’s Stab
Exploit An Enemy’s Weakness With A Chance Of Insta-Kill
Two stats will help a Thief stand out from the party. Speed will allow them to act first which can be good for abilities like Sandstorm to be used right away. Luck is also important and there are a variety of accessories that can help with that in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. A high Luck will give a character a better chance to deal critical strikes on an opponent or to activate the full potential of a skill like Assassin’s Stab. This skill will deal a good amount of damage to a target, for a Thief, but if that character has high Luck then this attack can also kill that enemy instantly.
3 Hypnowhip
Attack A Line Of Enemies With A Chance To Confuse
One of the best early weapons players can find in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is called the Thorn Whip. Thieves can equip it and it can hit all enemies of a single type in a row like Slimes. Thieves will eventually learn a spell called Hypnowhip which acts just like the whip weapons in the game. There is an extra benefit in using it over weapons though as Hypnowhip can cast Confuse on enemies. Confusion is a status ailment that will make monsters attack each other or themselves until they snap out of it.
2 Propeller Blade
Chance To Hit Enemies Twice
Propeller Blade will hit an enemy with a normal blow and then an extra attack will bounce off of it. Sometimes the attack can be lower or higher in terms of damage but overall getting two hits on an enemy is always great. It’s most useful when dealing with Metal Slimes.

The Biggest Changes In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
It’s been a long port-heavy road since 1988.
Metal Slimes are hard to hit but they give a large amount of EXP. Finding and eliminating them efficiently is tricky but they are one of the best ways to level up in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. A similar attack to Propeller Blade is the Hero Vocation’s Falcon Slash and both skills should help with taking down Metal Slime varieties.
1 Shocking Slash
Attack An Enemy With The Chance To Paralyze
Shocking Slash is one of the most accurate abilities a Thief can learn. The damage amount is decent but the real killer is the chance to paralyze enemies. Paralyzed enemies have a chance to attack but more often then not their attacks will freeze them in place. It even works on bosses like Orochi, one of the hardest bosses in the game who is based on Japanese mythology. Shocking Slash doesn’t have a 100% track record of working on enemies or bosses as it depends on Luck like the Assassin’s Stab. Based on experience though, the effect seems to be well over 50% which is not bad on top of getting that normal amount of damage in.
