Star Wars is for everyone, that’s always been true and it always will be true. Unfortunately, representation in the series as a whole is still weighted disproportionately in favor of male characters. That’s not to say Star Wars doesn’t include women, but you can’t deny there needs to be more.

It’s even worse when it comes to Star Wars video games. Male characters unfortunately still tend to outnumber the other genders. But luckily, there are still a number of titles where you can choose to play as a woman, and even some where the female player character is a default.

10 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Make Your Own Destiny

To many players, BioWare’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains the gold standard of Star Wars games for the simple reason of getting to make your own choices in the vast galaxy you know and love. One of those choices is who you play as, with your character’s appearance and gender being customizable.

This game lets you decide how you’ll make your way through the story as your character discovers their Force abilities and befriends all sorts of new people. Keep the word “decide” in mind, as you can also choose to be a complete and utter jerk to everyone, just like some people do in real life for some reason.

9 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2

Make Your Own Destiny, But Grayer

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords added a ton of new content and ideas over its predecessor, from new fighting styles to some shockingly nuanced writing. But one way it keeps things the same is its focus on choices, the player character’s gender included.

This time, your character is a Jedi exile, so there’s a whole backstory there. But in another nice departure from the previous game, the female version of the Exile is considered the canon version. Granted, that amounts to very little when the game itself is non-canon. But hey, it’s still there and you can play it.

You Know She’s Good Because She Has A Little Droid Buddy

It took a while for EA and Dice to really start to understand what people loved about the classic Star Wars Battlefront games. Some might argue they still didn’t get to that point, but the presence of the offline Instant Action mode and a genuinely great single-player campaign really went a long way.

The star of the single-player story is Iden Versio, an original character made for the game. You follow her journey from Imperial soldier to Rebel hero with plenty of character cameos and shockingly good writing along the way. Considering the microtransaction disaster this game launched with, the fact that Iden and her story are still well-regarded should tell you exactly how great it is.

7 Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Your School Wasn’t This Rad

Unlike other games in the Jedi Knight series, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy sets itself apart by allowing you to pick and choose who you play as rather than embodying a fixed character like the previous titles. Kyle Katarn, who starred in the games leading up to this one, serves as one of your mentors.

In this third-person shooter and lightsaber action game, you play as Jaden Korr, who can be a male or female member of several species including human, Twi’lek, Rodian, Zabrak, and even Kel Dor like Plo Koon. The setting of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy was super satisfying at the time, even if it’s a bit depressing in hindsight now.

6 Star Wars: The Old Republic

An Endless Sea Of Main Characters

While we unfortunately never got a third Knights of the Old Republic game (yet), lots of fans of those titles may not have realized just how well Star Wars: The Old Republic kind of fills that role. Yes, it’s an MMO, but you know what else it is? Another good excuse to exist in Star Wars.

You get your choice of a surprising assortment of character classes in The Old Republic, each offering their own extended introductory sequences like Dragon Age: Origins. Along with that and plenty of dialogue choices like any good BioWare game, you can also customize your character including their gender and race.

5 Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

An Abridged Galaxy Far, Far Away

Hey, Lego games count. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga tells the full story of the first six Star Wars movies in the most adorable and blocky way possible. That includes letting you play as all the major characters from those films.

Playing through this simple action game in story mode has you in the angular roles of characters like Luke Skywalker along with Leia Organa and Padme Amidala during their story segments. But you can then go back to each level again with every character you’ve unlocked. You know what that means. Leia fighting battle droids.

4 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

The Only Affordable Way To Play With Lego Anymore

The Lego games weren’t content to stop with the prequels and original trilogy. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga changes up the gameplay completely and adds the sequel films to the mix as well.

Not only does this mean more movies to play through in this perfect cheer-up game, but also thankfully more female characters like Rey and Rose Tico. If Star Wars is going to do Rose dirty in the movies, at least she can wreck some dudes in brick form.

3 Star Wars: Squadrons

You Can Finally “Punch It” Yourself

It’s always interesting to see a first-person game feature a customizable player character. But it’s still no less appreciated in Star Wars: Squadrons, which lets you pick your appearance and gender for not only your rebel pilot character, but the Imperial fighter pilot you also play as.

That’s right, this game has you playing both sides in a war between fascism and those oppressed by fascism. Yes, that admittedly doesn’t feel as fun lately, but the super-deep starfighter controls make it easier to forget that as you cruise around like Poe Dameron.

2 Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries Of The Sith

These Graphics Were Great At The Time, OK?

While technically an expansion and not a standalone game, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith is worth mentioning as a story where you play as an established female character. But this isn’t just any character, this is Mara Jade, perhaps the most requested non-canon character that people want back in the fold.

Like in Jedi Academy, Jedi Knight series star Kyle Katarn is still here as the player’s mentor. But this time, he goes missing, and it’s up to former Imperial assassin Mara to find him, after she gets tired of her studies at least. Who says Star Wars doesn’t have relatable characters?

A Wretched Hive Of Fun And Villainy

Arguably one of the coolest new characters to enter the Star Wars series is Kay Vess, a newbie scoundrel and occasional accidental success. Her debut in the super fun Star Wars Outlaws made a splash as she navigated the galaxy’s seedy underworld with the grace and tact of a hippo trying to sew.

Yeah, her coolness doesn’t come from being suave or snarky. It comes from being incredibly relatable and out of her depth. When you’re sneaking around as Kay, you feel like the underdog, and when you stumble your way to victory, it feels earned.
