Ever since his introduction in a comic strip that was published in January 1929, Popeye has been an iconic figure in popular culture. Now the spinach-loving guy is a villain in a slasher movie, and the film has a release date.
Deadline reported that Popeye The Slayer Man will be released in 2025. Although there is no release date right now, horror fans can look forward to seeing this famous figure in a whole new (and more terrifying) light next year. This movie joins the trend of horror movies inspired by beloved childhood characters, such as Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey.

A Netflix Horror Movie Stephen King Loves Is Getting A Sequel
Stephen King is a big fan of a Netflix horror movie that premiered on the streaming service in the summer of 2024, and now there will be a sequel.
The official trailer for the scary slasher moviePopeye The Slayer Man shows the main character making a documentary about a mysterious and creepy figure called Sailor Man. He investigates the myth and legend of this man while also learning that a factory shut down thanks to contaminated spinach. This is a fun nod to the famous song where he sings “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man” and adds “I’m strong to the finish/Cause I eats me spinach.”
Jeff Miller, a producer on Popeye The Slayer Man, said:
“We can’t wait for audiences to get a load of this gory and scary version of Popeye. We went old-school and focused on using real practical effects, and not relying on CG for the gore. We’re talking with very enthusiastic and interested buyers now. ”
Many people remember being fans of Popeye and his sidekick Olive Oyl when they were children. Besides appearing in comic strips, there were also short films called Popeye The Sailor. There is also a web series from 2018 called Popeye’s Island Adventures. It’s a great idea to make a horror film about this character for two reasons. For one thing, in a sea of horror movie remakes, it’s an original concept. That is something that loyal audiences who have seen every kind of killer, paranormal or not, can appreciate. It’s also a great idea to make Popeye evil since, as fans can see from the trailer, he has a strong and imposing physical presence (thanks to all that spinach that he eats). If any childhood character could become a villain, it would be him. It’s arguably easier to believe that Popeye would be dangerous than Mickey Mouse, who also got his own horror movie recently. That Disney character is much sweeter and more adorable.
According to Deadline, John Doolan wrote the screenplay, and Robert Michael Ryan is the director. Jason Stephens is Popeye, and the cast also includes Sarah Nicklin, Mabel Thomas, Angela Relucio, Elena Julianao, Steven McCormack, Jeff Thomas, Sean Michael Conway, and Marie-Louise Boisnier.
