Kraven the Hunter Box Office Prediction is Worse Than Morbius Opening

Kraven the Hunter Box Office Prediction is Worse Than Morbius Opening

Key Takeaways

  • Kraven the Hunter is projected to have one of the worst Sony Spider-Man Universe opening weekends.
  • Previous Sony Spidey Universe movies struggled arguably due to lesser-known characters.
  • R-rating may not save Kraven the Hunter from box office failure.

Kraven the Hunter box office projections indicate the movie may have one of the worst opening weekends of any Sony Spider-Man Universe film, with one exception.

Kraven the Hunter is Sony’s latest movie in a shared universe of Spider-Man characters that doesn’t feature the wall-crawler himself. Most of these movies have been box office bombs for Sony. Even Venom 3 failed to meet box office expectations, with most of its success owed to international markets. Except for the Venom movies, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has thus far featured lesser-known characters from the comics (at least to the general audience), which is arguably one reason for their poor box office performances. Kraven the Hunter has the benefit of featuring one of the more recognizable Spider-Man villains, but it appears that won’t be enough to help it at the box office.

Rumor: Venom Movie With New Main Character in Development at Sony

Sony is rumored to be developing a new Venom movie featuring a different Spider-Man character as the symbiote’s host instead of Eddie Brock.

Boxoffice Pro reports that Kraven the Hunter box office projections indicate it will have an opening weekend haul of $20 million-$25 million. If so, Kraven the Hunter will have one of the worst opening weekends of any Sony Spider-Man Universe movie, ahead of Madame Web‘s disastrous domestic box office debut of roughly $15 million but behind Morbius‘ $39 million first-weekend haul. Boxoffce Pro notes that Kraven the Hunter could potentially end its theatrical run with a lower domestic box office total than Venom 3‘s opening weekend haul of $51M.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson As Kraven The Hunter

The only good news for Kraven the Hunter is that it may not have the worst opening total of its first weekend. Boxoffice Pro notes that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is on track to open even lower with $8 million-$15 million. Neither will have an easy go at the office, as Wicked and Moana 2 are expected to continue performing well after their respective opening weekends.

Some fans hoped Kraven the Hunter‘s R rating would help it distinguish itself from the previous Sony Spider-Man Universe flops. Others figured Kraven the Hunter‘s R rating wouldn’t save it from Sony’s record of mediocrity. Some argue that R-rated comic book movies can entice audiences by offering something a little less standard than the generally family-friendly superhero fare. Unfortunately for Kraven the Hunter, it doesn’t seem to benefit from its more mature tone.

If Kraven the Hunter flops at the box office, many fans will view it as a waste of a character who should appear in Spider-Man 4. While Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to feature Marvel characters from non-MCU movies for its multiverse story, few want to see Sony’s Spider-Man Universe characters join the MCU for the Multiverse Saga’s ending, with Tom Hardy’s Venom being a possible exception. Sony seemingly knows moviegoers are planning to skip Kraven the Hunter, as director J.C Chandor recently asked fans to give the movie a chance despite their experience with past Sony Spider-Man Universe bombs. As of this writing, audiences don’t seem to be interested in doing so.

Kraven the Hunter will be released in theaters on December 13, 2024.
