Isabel May’s Casting As Sidney’s Daughter Suggests A Plot Hole

Isabel May's Casting As Sidney's Daughter Suggests A Plot Hole

Key Takeaways

  • Fans anticipate Sidney Prescott’s family introduction in “Scream 7”
  • Time jump speculation to address Sidney’s daughter age in the upcoming movie.
  • Unresolved family dynamics of Sidney’s prompt fan theories and discussions.

The more things change, the more they stay the same, but fans are hoping that Scream 7 will feel pretty different from the previous installments in the horror franchise. One major change? Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) now has a family with Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), who will hopefully appear in the sequel. It doesn’t seem possible to feature Sidney’s family without Dempsey, but at the time of this writing, there is no confirmation that the actor is starring in the sequel.

However, as of the end of November 2024, there is some casting news about a key player in the seventh movie. Fans are curious about what that could mean for Sidney. This character may cause a plot hole.

Isabel May’s Scream 7 Casting Suggests A Possible Plot Hole

Isabel May as Elsa Dutton in 1883

Deadline reported that Isabel May will play Sidney Prescott’s daughter in Scream 7. There is just one problem with this casting news: Sidney is pushing a stroller in Scream (2022), which suggests she has a young child who is either a baby or, at the very most, a toddler. How can the movie explain that Sidney’s child is a teenager now?

Scream fans have tried to work out an explanation for this seemingly confusing plot point. One fan wondered on Reddit if “Maybe she and Mark had a kid before S4. It was never part of the story for S4 so we never saw or heard about it.” Another fan thought Scream 7 could have a time jump to explain Sidney’s daughter being in high school. If that happens, it could also explain a fan theory about Sidney’s daughter being Ghostface.

The heart of the matter is that the Scream franchise has never explained Sidney Prescott’s family well. Some fans say that Sidney and Mark have two kids, and others say they have three children. If Sidney was 17 years old in 1996 when Scream came out and Scream 7 is set in 2026, then the famous final girl would be 47 years old. It would be possible for her to have a teenager by then. However, while it’s technically possible that Sidney has an older daughter that she never mentioned in Scream 4 or Scream (2022), would that really be the case? It doesn’t seem realistic for Sidney to hide that fact from the other characters. She bonds with Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and it seems like she would tell her something like this. It also seems unlikely that Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), who Sidney is close to, wouldn’t know Sidney has an older child.

Perhaps a time jump in Scream 7 would be the simplest and best explanation. However, that would present its own problems. If a lot of time has passed since a Ghostface targeted Gale and the others in Scream 6, then why is someone starting this killing spree all over again? There are a lot of questions that have to be considered, and hopefully Scream 7 will answer them.

How Did Sidney Prescott’s Scream (2022) Story End?

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in Scream (2022)

The last time fans saw Sidney Prescott in Scream (2022), she leaves her family to return to Woodsboro, California to help fight Ghostface. Dewey Riley (David Arquette) calls Sidney to explain there’s a new threat, and she jumps at the chance to support the other characters. By the end of the movie, Sidney survives, and it’s assumed that she goes back home safe and sound to be with her family again. Since Sidney isn’t in Scream 6, fans didn’t get an update on her or hear anything about how she was doing. Her location is unknown, along with details of her family life. On the one hand, that’s a good thing since it means that fans don’t have preconceived notions of what the character is doing now. On the other hand, though, audiences don’t have enough information.

What Are Isabel May’s Most Notable TV And Movie Roles?

  • Taylor in Let’s Scare Julie (2019)
  • Veronica Duncan on Young Sheldon (2018-2020)
  • Katie Cooper on Alexa & Katie (2018-2020)
  • Leighton in I Want You Back (2020)
  • Elsa Dutton on 1883 (2021-2022) and 1923 (2022-2023)

Besides the high kill count in Scream (2022), fans took note of Sidney, who was older (and perhaps a little bit wiser) than she had been the last time they saw her. There is a fairly large gap between Scream 4, which was released in 2011, and the fifth movie, which came out one decade later. It made sense that Sidney now had a family and had grown up a lot. But time will tell if Scream 7 will properly explain the ages of Sidney’s children.
