Half-Life, Counter-Strike 2, and Fallout. These are slower-paced shooters, where you need to count your bullets, watch your step, and take down enemies methodically and cautiously. I like this kind of high-pressure, knife-edge action, but sometimes you just want to cut loose. Doom Eternal is a great, relatively recent example. Embellishing the spirit of id Software’s peerless original, it’s all about speed and aggression, a boiling, bloody ballet that challenges you to kill fast and kill lots. Such is the style of one of 2024’s best-loved Steam FPS games. You may not have heard of it, but it’s got almost spotless reviews and a new, free expansion that adds nine fresh levels. This is I Am Your Beast.
In I Am Your Beast, you play as the aristocratically named Alphonse Harding, a retired secret agent living peacefully in the North American wilderness. One day, your former handlers appear and demand that you return for one last job. You say no. But they won’t listen. As squad after squad of government goons try to tag you, bag you, and bring you in, you’re forced to defend yourself. The scene is set for one of the most frenetic and gruesome FPS games of 2024.
Each level serves as a kind of time trial – using knives, guns, and your bare hands, you need to eliminate all your attackers, avoid getting hit yourself, and make it to the exit as fast as possible. You can clamber up trees, slide beneath fallen logs, and soar through the air on ziplines as you attempt to combo kill your unlucky assailants with as much flair and ferocity as possible. On repeat playthroughs, I Am Your Beast becomes a macabre kind of rhythm game, where you try to kill everyone with as few bullets as possible while perfectly timing every jump and maneuver.
Of the 1,491 user reviews posted for I Am Your Beast on Steam so far, 99% are positive. And if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s just gotten a sizable free expansion that adds nine fresh levels, ten cutscenes, and a totally new ending. Bigger and better than ever before, if you want to play I Am Your Beast, you can get it right here.
