Bosch: Legacy season 3 will air in March 2025, and to the chagrin of many fans, it’ll be the final season, before Ballard takes on the reins of Michael Connelly’s crime universe. A continuation can’t be ruled out just yet, as fans have created a movement to save the show with a petition, which is growing fast in the lead up to the new series airing. There are a lot of stories still left to tell, and a major one will likely be introduced in Bosch: Legacy season 3 and become a major part of the Ballard spin-off series.
In the back offices at the LAPD, there is a vast collection of cold case files known as the Library of Lost Souls. They were first introduced in Michael Connelly’s book, Desert Star, which has been confirmed to be the inspiration for Bosch: Legacy season 3 and Ballard season 1. Maggie Q will play Renee Ballard in the finale of Bosch: Legacy‘s final season before taking the lead role in Ballard.

Fans of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy know all about Harry Bosch’s desire to solve the cold case murders of the Jane Doe victims displayed on his desk throughout the series. With the assistance of Renee Ballard, he may finally get the opportunity to explore his white whale cases, while also discovering more victims whose perpetrators slipped through the system via the Library of Lost Souls murder books. The cold case files play a key part in Michael Connelly’s more recent books. As stated, they first appeared in Desert Star, so they will probably be mentioned in the finale of Bosch: Legacy season 3, and follow on and become more prevalent in the Ballard spin-off. In Connelly’s most recent book, The Waiting, Maddie Bosch takes a keen interest in the library of lost souls in order to solve a key case. The plot synopsis for The Waiting reads:
Ballard takes on a new volunteer to the cold case unit: Bosch’s daughter Maddie, now a patrol officer. But Maddie has an ulterior motive for getting access to the city’s library of lost souls, a case that may be the most iconic in the city’s history.

Harry Bosch Could Have Explored Many More Cases In The Library Of Lost Souls In Future Seasons Of Bosch: Legacy
The Library Of Lost Souls represents the ultimate mission for an LAPD detective, past or present. Renee Ballard looks like she’ll be the catalyst for Harry Bosch to temporarily put private sector work to one side, to investigate the many murders that haven’t yet been solved in the city of Angels. Bosch will appear in three episodes of Ballard season 1, but it’s not known if he’ll appear again if future seasons are picked up. As it stands, Bosch: Legacy will end after season 3, and this could have a massive effect on the exciting lost souls storyline moving forward.
Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch’s Joint Book Appearances
- Dark Sacred Night (2018)
- The Night Fire (2019)
- The Dark Hours (2021)
- Desert Star (2022)
- The Waiting (2024)
Future seasons of Bosch: Legacy could have focused on Harry Bosch looking into some of these cold cases, while also assisting Renee Ballard in her own show. The finale of Bosch: Legacy season 3 will act as a backdoor pilot to Ballard, but it could also have been a set-up for Bosch: Legacy season 4. In fact, it most probably was a set-up for additional solo Harry Bosch stories, as the creative team were told Bosch: Legacy wouldn’t be renewed after they’d already finished shooting season 3. It feels like a missed opportunity not to explore the library of lost souls in a Bosch: Legacy and Ballard crossover storyline. They will connect in Bosch: Legacy season 3 and Ballard season 1, but that will be it. It’ll be solely down to Renee Ballard to investigate ALL those cold cases in one show, as opposed to two shows balancing out the workload.
