It’s going to be a scary festive season. Variety reported that Black Christmas will be screened in 4K in some movie theaters for its 50th anniversary, thanks to the American Genre Film Archive.
Black Christmas, which is one of the most famous horror movies about the holiday season, will play in several theaters in Canada and the United States from December 7th, 2024 to December 22nd, 2024. The company Mutant has also created a special and beautiful poster that fans can find at the screenings. This adds a special and unique element to each screening that fans won’t want to miss.

Black Christmas is such an iconic horror film that there are two remakes from 2006 and 2019. The original movie was released in 1974 and stars Andrea Martin, Olivia Hussey, and Margot Kidder. The story explores what happens when college students spend the winter holidays at their sorority house and are chased by a killer who keeps phoning them. The movie is an early example of several scary movie tropes, including “Evil Phone” and “The Calls Are Coming From Inside The House.” The campy tone is a bit similar to the 1979 classic When A Stranger Calls, which stars Carol Kane and also centers around a killer making creepy phone calls to their intended victims.
Mutant made an official statement about the re-release of Black Christmas:
“What a gift it will be to see ‘Black Christmas’ in theaters, in December, and in glorious 4K presentation… With a film as influential (and Canadian) as ‘Black Christmas’, no artist is better suited to deliver the goods than Toronto’s own Phantom City Creative.”
While some Christmas horror movies like Jack Frost are forgettable, the original Black Christmas is iconic and influential. Many slasher movies follow a similar formula of main characters stuck in the same location and it’s a great idea to put the film in theaters again. Horror fans who live in or near the cities where the movie is being screened should definitely check it out. It’s also fairly unpredictable, which is a big deal for slasher movies. Black Christmas also has a genuinely frightening horror villain called “The Moaner,” who goes on a killing spree.
