You’re not alone if you feel empty after finishing Arcane Season 2. I just got through Act 3, and already want to know what’s next for Jinx, Caitlyn, Vi, and everyone else. It was an explosive finale and I’m certain we’ll all be crafting theories for years to come, but it’s not the end of Riot’s League of Legends cinematic universe. Now that Arcane is over, showrunner and co-creator Christian Linke confirms that there are multiple follow-ups in the works, and we even know where we’re headed next.
With over 150 champions in League of Legends, Riot has no shortage of characters to pull from for future series. The MOBA‘s universe is constantly getting bigger, and Linke confirms that we’re going well beyond Piltover in the near future.
“When I looked at two or three bigger threads on Reddit that were like ‘they’re going to do more shows or movies, what will be the focal points?’ Pretty much all the top-voted directions are the ones we’re exploring,” Linke says in a Twitch chat with LoL content creator ‘Necrit94’.
“So we are investing quite a bit in Noxus, Ionia, Demacia. We start, really, with character stories, but I’m very confident we’re investing in the right stories.”
Arcane takes place almost entirely within the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, a location champions like Caitlyn, Heimerdinger, and Jayce all call home, but if the end of Season 2 is any indication, plenty of the characters are now moving beyond the city.
Noxus is where Arcane’s Ambessa Medarda and her daughter Mel hail from, and it looks like the latter was heading home right at the end of episode nine. Noxus is seen tyrannical and bloodthirsty, so there’s no telling what Mel will do, but she’ll likely play a part in this Noxus-centric project. Plus, the Black Rose is still lurking around, and it seems like that saga hasn’t quite concluded yet.
Then there’s Ionia, home to League of Legends champions like Yasuo and his brother, Yone, as well as fan-favorites like Irelia and Akali. The archipelago’s culture is shaped by balance, and as Riot’s official description of the land says, “the border between the material and spirit realms tends to be more permeable here, especially in the wild forests and mountains.”
The last region Linke mentions is Demacia, which is where heroes like Garen, Lux, and Sylas come from. You might remember how throughout Arcane there was a lot of talk of Piltover’s distaste for mages, and mention of the Rune Wars. Well, Demacia is an isolationist region that acts as a refuge from sorcery after the Rune Wars, with the nation built on top of petricite – a stone that dampens magic.
