Some Ubisoft Games Are Having Major Issues On Windows 11

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft and Ubisoft are working on fixes for Ubisoft PC games like Star Wars Outlaws and three Assassin’s Creed titles that crash on Windows 11 PCs.
  • Star Wars Outlaws received a temporary fix for crashing issues and added new gameplay features in a recent update.
  • Windows 11 users experiencing crashes with Ubisoft games should avoid manually updating until fixes are released.

Microsoft confirmed that some Ubisoft PC titles, including Star Wars Outlaws and three Assassin’s Creed entries, have crashed on Windows 11 PCs that were updated to version 24H2. Microsoft and Ubisoft stated that fixes for each affected game are in the works, with Star Wars Outlaws already receiving a temporary workaround.

The news came a few days after one of the titles on the list of affected games, Star Wars Outlaws, released a major version update on all platforms. Star Wars Outlaws version 1.4.0 fixed some lingering issues and added quality-of-life changes to the game’s stealth system. Rather than fail a stealth-focused mission outright, Star Wars Outlaws now gives players the choice to escalate the situation into combat or change their stealth tactics on the fly. Along with the stealth changes, Kay can now carry a two-handed weapon in more situations, and weak points were added to different enemies, which players can exploit to bring fights to an explosive end.

Although some issues with Star Wars Outlaws were addressed on Ubisoft’s side, players have reported issues with a major platform that the game is on. According to Microsoft’s list of known issues, Windows 11 users who updated to version 24H2 may encounter issues with five Ubisoft titles, as the games could freeze at any point during gameplay. Microsoft stated that users reported a black screen as one of the signs of a crash, which forced them to use the Task Manager to close the game completely. The affected games include Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and three Assassin’s Creed titles; Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla.

Which Ubisoft Games May Crash On Windows 11 24H2?

  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
  • Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft reported that temporary fixes have been made for Star Wars Outlaws to prevent the game from crashing outright, though some performance issues may persist. Microsoft also placed a temporary “compatibility hold” on PCs that had not updated to Windows 11 24H2 but had any of the affected games installed on their systems. Microsoft also asked affected users not to use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the Media Creation tools as a way to manually update to version 24H2 until all the aforementioned Ubisoft titles have been fixed on the platform.

Although Windows 11 has grown in use, the operating system has a long reputation for releases that have affected game performance until adjustments were made down the line. It remains to be seen when the fixes from Microsoft and Ubisoft will be implemented on Windows 11 PCs.
