Key Takeaways
- It turns out there is no safe date to release a game in 2025, as the year will be jam-packed with major releases.
- In February alone, Avowed will launch alongside Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Monster Hunter Wilds.
- But that isn’t deterring Obsidian, as the studio believes its game will be able to rise to the top.
When Obsidian’s upcoming fantasy role-playing game, Avowed, launches next year on February 18, it’ll be just one title of several heavy hitters to release that month. That’s because, after a delay, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch four days earlier, on February 14, and Monster Hunter Wilds will launch 10 days later on February 28.

Avowed’s combat won’t blow anyone away, but its world and characters are pure Obsidian goodness that I can’t get enough of.
That’s three huge Game of the Year contenders within 28 days. And that’s not even counting the likes of Civilization VII and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, among other titles.
In other words, February is a jam-packed month. But if you ask Carrie Patel, Avowed’s director, she isn’t worried about the game releasing among other competition. The reason? Well, 2025 is setting up to be chock-full of huge titles regardless.
2025 Is Going To Be An All-Time Year
In an interview with GamesRadar, Patel shooed away any concern about Avowed launching against other major titles. “The wonderful thing about the modern age, as a gamer, is you’ve always got great new stuff coming out,” she said. “I don’t think you’re ever going to find a window where absolutely nothing is coming out, and you’re going to be the only one out for a month.
“But we’re very confident that Avowed is going to stand on its own.”
Indeed, 2025 is shaping up to be an all-time year for games. A cursory glance at GameSpot’s running calendar of 2025 releases has the likes of Donkey Kong and a Tales remaster in January, Suikoden in March and a new Fatal Fury in April. And that’s just confirmed dates.
Games like Borderlands 4, Grand Theft Auto 6, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei and Doom: The Dark Ages have all been given 2025 windows, meaning there is no perfect time to release a game. There’s going to be competition either way, and stiff one at that.
Still, Patel is confident that Avowed will be able to rise to the top. “I’m very excited about a lot of those games coming out personally, and I think that we’re also a very distinct experience from them,” she added. “And so, players who want an Obsidian-style RPG, with our approach to choice and consequence and our very nuanced take on narrative, are going to find exactly what they’re looking for with Avowed.”
