Key Takeaways
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is nearly here, and in the leadup to its release, Paramount has begun sending out promotional press kits.
- Those kits include a working Sega Genesis cartridge, complete with custom box art.
- The cartridge has a minigame featuring Sonic and Shadow, along with character art and posters in pixelated glory.
- That’s not all, though, as a unique twist points to when fans can expect the next movie trailer.
Sonic the Hedgehog may be in glorious HD on the gaming side, and in real-life via the current movie trilogy, but Paramount is going back in time to celebrate the “Blue Blur.” More specifically, to the Sega Genesis era.
As first revealed by IGN, and later documented by several online influencers, Paramount recently sent a press kit for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That kit included an actual working Sega Genesis cartridge. It is as glorious as it sounds.

It’s Sonic’s World, And We’re Just Living In It
Naturally, the cartridge is housed in an actual custom Sega Genesis box art package. That custom art features the live-action version of Sonic, with the cartridge itself having artwork of both Sonic and Shadow.
Plugging in the cartridge triggers pixelated portraits of all the characters in the upcoming movie, complete with some dialogue. More so, all the release posters for the movie so far have also received a pixel redux.
But that’s not all, as there is an actual playable minigame featuring Sonic and Shadow. It’s a simple game, with Sonic running away from Shadow, but like all classic games of the era, it has a twist.
By inputting the classic Sonic 3 cheat code (Up Up Down Down Up Up Up Up), Sonic will scold you for cheating before revealing that a new trailer will debut on Nov. 25.
Promotional tie-in press kits are nothing new, but nothing has been done quite like this before. It’s an awesome homage to Sonic’s roots, along with a neat way to promote the movie. Of course, almost all of this will fly over the heads of younger Sonic fans, but for us long-time supporters, this is absolutely everything.
