Origins Producer Wants To Make A Sequel With A New Protagonist

Key Takeaways

  • Dynasty Warriors: Origins is refreshing the series in a big way, with the new original protagonist being one of the biggest changes.
  • Origins’ producer, Tomohiko Sho, says he’d love to make a sequel if the first game sells well.
  • If that does end up happening, though, Sho says he’d probably like it to star a different protagonist.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins producer and Omega Force president Tomohiko Sho says that if he’s able to work on a sequel to Origins, it’ll likely have a brand-new original protagonist.

It’s been a surprisingly long time since we last got a non-spin-off Dynasty Warriors, but that’s about to change with the launch of Dynasty Warriors: Origins. As the lack of a “10” at the end of the title implies, Origins is doing quite a lot differently from previous games in the series, and is aiming to hake things up to draw in a new crowd while also bringing back what veteran fans loved.

As someone who has always wanted to get into Dynasty Warriors, Origins is shaping up to be the perfect jumping-in point.

Although I had nothing but positive things to say after previewing the game recently, time will tell whether or not Dynasty Warriors: Origins strikes a chord with fans. Since Origins is doing things differently enough not to be considered a mainline numbered title, I asked producer Tomohiko Sho what his thoughts are on continuing Origins as a separate series with a potential sequel.

If Dynasty Warriors: Origins Gets A Sequel, It’ll Probably Have A New Protagonist

In response, Sho told me that he would love to make a sequel to Dynasty Warriors: Origins in the future if it “sells well” and Koei Tecmo allows him to continue the story. Sho specifically pointed out that the campaign mode only covers half of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story (albeit in more detail than before), and that he’d like to tell the rest of the story after that.

Beyond that, Sho actually already has an idea for a potential sequel to Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and one that he hadn’t shared up until that point. After having talked about Origins’ original protagonist, Sho notes that if he makes another entry in the series, he’d probably like to do it with a brand-new hero.

This is something that personally I’ve only thought and actually haven’t told anyone, but deep in my heart I do think that if we make a sequel, I’m thinking that, even though this protagonist will make an appearance, I’d kind of like to make it with a new protagonist. – Tomohiko Sho

For anyone else who took this as a somewhat bad sign for the amnesiac protagonist of Origins, Sho did clarify that he would still make an appearance in the game, but that he’d like someone else to be the main character. As for who that might be, we’ll have to hope that Origins does well enough that we eventually see it expanded upon.
