Luma Island starts you off with a ton of new tools with which to chop wood, mine, farm, and do everything you need to discover all its secrets and make some gold. While these tools function pretty well at the start of the game, they get a bit weak when you find yourself in more difficult areas later on.
Thankfully, you can upgrade your tools to make them stronger as you find these new areas. It also makes gathering materials a lot easier in areas you’ve already covered, like the Farm, and can make enemies that were once scary much easier to deal with. Here’s everything you need to know about upgrading tools in Luma Island.

All tools in Luma Island, including the whip, can be upgraded by using the tool upgrade anvil at the entrance to the town. It’s right next to Balthazar’s shop, and you can use it at anytime of the day.
In order to upgrade your tools, you need the right materials and tool tokens. The needed materials will change depending on what stage the tool is at. For example, you’ll start out needing quite a lot of copper to upgrade them, but you’ll start needing iron once you’ve got them upgraded to their iron variants, and so forth. The whip is the only exception here, really, as you’ll need leather to upgrade it instead of different types of ore.
You’ll also need gold to upgrade your tools, and the better the tools get, the more expensive their upgrades are. You can make gold pretty easily by following the progression of your profession, but you can also sell a variety of items you find while exploring to make some extra gold.
Upgrading your tools gives a variety of effects, depending on which tool you’re upgrading. Your axe and pickaxe will do more damage to harvestables, your whip will do more damage, and your fishing rod will become easier to maneuver. Upgrading your hoe will allow you to find more Earth spirits when you till the soil. All upgrades to all tools will also increase your chances of finding rare drops (and catching rarer fish in the case of the fishing rod).
Where To Find Upgrade Materials In Luma Island
Each tool requires different materials to upgrade, and here’s where you can look to find them all:
- Ore: Can be mined in abandoned caves.
- Leather: Crafted from mushrooms.
- Rock spirit: Dropped while mining rock and ore.
- Nature spirit: Dropped while chopping trees, ferns, etc.
- Water spirit: Dropped when catching fish.
- Lost spirit: Found while exploring in Ancient Temples.
- Earth Spirit: Found when tilling soil.
- Tool Tokens: Found in treasure chests and inside Ancient Temples.
Spirits are usually abundant, and you shouldn’t find yourself struggling to find any type if you just play the game normally and do some exploring. The most rare resource to find would be Tool Tokens, but as long as you check the spots your Lumas point out for chests (and find them yourself while exploring Temples), you should slowly find enough to upgrade your tools fairly quickly in Luma Island.
