Sung Hoo Park, the Jujutsu Kaisen anime director, is working on a new original animation for Disney+. Recently, Disney hosted the Disney APAC Content Showcase 2024 in Singapore, announcing several new titles, including Japanese ones.
Disney has been working consistently with APAC creators since 2021 and the APAC Showcase is held every year since 2022. Despite its name, they also bring sneak peeks and previews for titles produced in other countries, but one of the main focuses is to present new Asian-Pacific titles to the public.
Sung Hoo Park’s new series is titled Bullet/Bullet, and it is slated to debut exclusively on Disney+. He drafted the story for a decade. A trailer was shared, previewing an action urban rally story with CG cars. As a good deal of anime do today, it seemingly mixes CG technology with 2D animation. Check out:
Other main staff members were also revealed: Aki Kindaichi (Umamsume: Cinderella Gray) is in charge of the scripts, Hidetaka Tenjin (several Macross series) is making the concept designs and mechanical designs. Shin Misawa (Initial D) is directing the car action scenes.
Sung Hoo Park’s Career in Japanese Animation
A Macross fan going professional
Sung Hoo Park’s (sometimes transliterated as Seong-Hoo-Park and Sunghoo Park) interest in anime started in elementary school after watching Macross (a franchise that should come to Disney+ at some point). In the MyAnimeList database, the first time he was credited in an anime was in 2005, working on in-between animation processes for Tide-Line Blue. The first time he directed an animation was in the 26th Fairy Tail episode.
He worked on several series on key animation or assistant direction, and his debut as a main series direction came in 2017, with Garo: Vanishing Line. Three years later, he directed The God of High School, one of the first Crunchyroll original series (and a manhwa adaptation). Still in 2020, his most famous work premiered in Japan and internationally: Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation.
Jujutsu Kaisen brought Sung Hoo Park’s name to the spotlight. His competent and creative direction greatly contributed to the anime’s success (of course, alongside many other great animators), making fans amazed at the quality of animation. Sung Hoo Park later directed the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, and recently got projects in other franchises.
He directed Eiichiro Oda’s Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation anime adaptation (available on Netflix), and also directed and storyboarded the original Adult Swim’s Ninja Kamui anime (now available on Max).
