Because getting hit in the face with a metal barrel isn’t ideal.
There aren’t many status effects to monitor, but they are also no mere setbacks, as each can swiftly make a bad situation worse in its own way. The last thing you’d need in a firefight is to be weighed down by encumbrance or distracted by hunger, after all.
Every Status Effect And How To Cure It
Bleeding, Hunger, Encumbered, Radiation, Psi-Radiation, and Alcohol are the status effects you’ll need to keep an eye on while exploring the Zone. Some hit you hard during skirmishes with mutants or enemy NPCs, while others are self-inflicted by your actions or poor planning.
Item cures are the usual remedy, but many have double-edge effects where they will fix one ailment but will nudge you closer to getting another. However, alcohol, which fades with time, and the encumbered condition, solved by managing your inventory, are exceptions.

Status Condition |
Causes |
Effect |
Cure(s) |
---|---|---|---|
Bleeding |
Caused by being struck by bullets or mutants, as well as contact with barbed wires or glass shards anomalies. |
Displayed by a red blood droplet icon above your health bar. It results in health loss over time, which worsens if the icon turns bright red. |
|
Hunger |
Accumulates if you neglect eating or wake up after sleeping. Drinking energy drinks and alcohol can also trigger and worsen the condition with repeated use. |
Shown by the chicken drumstick icon. Hunger affects combat efficiency, including decreased stamina recovery and increased damage taken. |
|
Encumbered |
Stacks up when you exceed the yellow or red carry weight thresholds. |
A weight icon above your health bar indicates encumbrance. This hampers mobility, reduces stamina recovery, and increases stamina consumption for actions like jumping or sprinting. Exceeding your overall capacity also renders Skif immobile. |
Reduce carry weight by stashing, dropping, or selling items from your inventory to the green zone. Certain artifacts or armors can increase carry weight capacity, and the Hercules drug offers a 5-minute 20kg boost. |
Radiation |
Exposure to irradiated areas or wearing radioactive artifacts causes the radiation meter to fill. |
Noisy film grain on the screen and a crackling sound signals you’re irradiated. This causes damage over time, and a full meter results in immediate death. |
|
Psi-Radiation |
Caused by the Controller mutant and psi-beacons that release psi-emissions. |
Induces strange voices and ghostly hallucinations that wear down health. |
As for the Controller, we had to kill it to eliminate the effect, whereas psi-beacons can simply be deactivated. Armor suits such as SEVA-I and Psi-Blocks (+10 Psi Protection for one minute) mitigate the effects of psi-emissions. |
Alcohol |
Consuming alcoholic beverages causes this condition. |
Causes blurry vision and wobbly camera effects, which worsen with repeated use. |
Wait for the effect to naturally wear off. |
If you find yourself unable to sleep, it’s either you are hungry, bleeding, or irradiated. The fix is as simple as getting rid of these effects using any of the detailed cures.
