Dragon Ball Super Manga Unlikely to Return This Year

Key Takeaways

  • Dragon Ball Super manga remains on indefinite hiatus since creator Akira Toriyama’s passing.
  • No new chapters released since March 2024, with fans still waiting for updates on when it may return.
  • Despite the hiatus, franchise still offers content to fans, with hints of a possible return in the future.

Dragon Ball Super manga has been on hiatus since March 20, 2024. Chapter 103 was probably submitted to the V-Jump magazine shortly after the passing of creator Akira Toriyama, and no new Dragon Ball Super chapter has been released ever since.

The manga started serialization in 2015, and is illustrated by Toyotaro, with 23 volumes so far. VIZ Media publishes both the compiled books and digital chapters in English since 2016. There has been information pointing to an eventual return to the series, and fans initially supposed the hiatus would be a short one.

Dragon Ball Super’s manga went on an indefinite hiatus following the untimely passing of Akira Toriyama. Here’s what to expect from its return.

However, fans remain with no news about when the next chapter will launch. And this month’s V-Jump brings neither a new chapter nor information about the end of the hiatus in December, which means Dragon Ball Super is unlikely to return in 2024 (if it does return before 2025, it will not be in V-Jump).

Super is on Hiatus But Toyotaro Worked on Another DBS One-Shot

The latest Dragon Ball Super chapters brought an end to the Tournament of Power arc and seemed to pay a small homage to Toriyama. Fans expected the series to return in May 2024, which didn’t happen.

It seems unlikely the series will not return. So far, it hasn’t been officially canceled, and only three chapters are not yet compiled, which points more to the idea that Toyotarou was planning a new arc (because it’s too few chapters to be compiled). However, he could be going through a hard time coming up with ideas for the story, especially considering Toriyama’s death was probably a big challenge to him, who had worked closely with the Dragon Ball creator.

Despite Super still being on hiatus, the franchise is still bringing more content to fans. In October, a Dragon Ball Super Divers one-shot penned by Toyotaro was published (which brought fans some hope he would soon return to Super) — this short story is to market the new Dragon Ball Super Divers arcade game.
