Key Takeaways
- Avowed’s delay to February 2025 was to give it more breathing room on Xbox Game Pass.
- Avowed faces stiff competition in February from other big game releases.
- Director Carrie Patel is confident Avowed can stand out despite the busy release month.
Avowed game director Carrie Patel is not worried about the game releasing in such a busy month. Obsidian’s Avowed has enjoyed a great deal of hype since it was first announced, and that has only intensified after the latest batch of previews. Obsidian fans have been greatly looking forward to playing Avowed for themselves, but the game was unfortunately delayed out of 2024 to instead launch in February 2025.
Avowed‘s release date delay wasn’t due to any technical problems with the game or the title really needing more development time. It was reportedly done to give it more room to breathe on Game Pass. After all, Avowed is a day one Xbox Game Pass game, and it would have found itself releasing at a time when the service was hit with huge day one games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, STALKER 2, and soon, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Delaying Avowed made sense, though the game has now found itself releasing in an incredibly busy month for new game releases.

Avowed Fans Will Have the Chance to Play the Game Early
Xbox reveals new details about the upcoming release of first-person fantasy RPG Avowed and how fans interested in the game can gain early access.
In an interview with Games Radar, Avowed director Carrie Patel acknowledged this, but indicated that it wasn’t that big of a concern for the team. “The wonderful thing about the modern age, as a gamer, is you’ve always got great new stuff coming out. I don’t think you’re ever going to find a window where absolutely nothing is coming out and you’re going to be the only one out for a month. But we’re very confident that Avowed is going to stand on its own.” Even so, there’s no denying that February 2025 is an exceptionally busy month for the gaming industry.
Big New Game Releases for February 2025
- Civilization 7 – February 11
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – February 11
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows – February 14
- Avowed – February 18
- Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – February 21
- Monster Hunter Wilds – February 28
February 11 will see the launch of both Civilization 7 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on the same day, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows is launching on February 14. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii has nailed down a February 21 release date, and Monster Hunter Wilds is coming out on February 28. Avowed is sandwiched in the middle of all these other game releases, settling on a February 18 launch date. And while it’s true that it’s hard to avoid other big releases no matter when a game launches, it seems like releasing in January 2025, which is significantly less busy, would have made a little more sense.
Something that will definitely give Avowed a huge advantage compared to the other big games releasing in February 2025 is the fact that it’s launching as a day one Xbox Game Pass title. This means that Avowed has a built-in playerbase, which could go a long way in boosting the game’s profile, especially if word of mouth is good. In any case, I have enjoyed what I’ve played of Avowed so far, and I’m very much looking forward to the full release on February 18.
