Why Yamato Joining The Crew Would Have Ruined The Monster Trio

Why Yamato Joining The Crew Would Have Ruined The Monster Trio

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

Key Takeaways

  • Yamato’s mastery of advanced Conqueror’s Haki and Devil Fruit ability made her a powerful fighter in Wano.
  • Keeping Yamato out of the Straw Hat crew maintained the balance and dynamic of the monster trio.
  • With her unique abilities, Yamato’s potential entry into the crew could shift the power hierarchy significantly.

The Wano Country arc included the debut of many incredible fighters, and One Piece fans were extremely excited to see them in action. Out of the many individuals, Yamato was arguably the most exciting. She was Kaido’s daughter but had a soft spot for Kozuki Oden. She was mesmerized after reading Oden’s journal. In fact, she began to call herself Oden and openly opposed her father’s sadistic ways.

Yamato met Ace many years prior to the current timeline. During their encounter, Ace told her about Luffy and his dream. Yamato immediately remembered that Roger also used the same words that she had read in Oden’s manuscript. So she waited for Luffy’s arrival. Yamato finally met Luffy when the Straw Hat Pirates made their way to Wano.

Upon seeing him, she expressed her desire to join the Straw Hats, and Luffy did not seem to mind. So most fans were expecting Yamato to be a Straw Hat by the end of the arc. Following Kaido’s defeat, Yamato seemed to have a change of heart, and she decided to stay behind. Her decision left fans perplexed, but ultimately it was the right choice because, if Yamato had joined, it would have ruined the dynamic of the monster trio.

Yamato Was A Powerful Oni Princess

One Piece

For this conjecture to make sense, fans must remember Yamato’s strength. She was exposed to battle and bloodshed at an early age, which made her both physically and mentally resolute. Yamato is able to use all three types of Haki, which is an impressive feat in itself. But what makes her truly special is the use of advanced Conqueror’s Haki. Until the Wano Country arc, fans had no idea that Conqueror’s Haki could be infused with attacks.

My name is Yamato. I’m Kaido’s son.

With time, it has become rather clear that advanced Conqueror’s Haki drastically increases the damage output. Almost all great fighters in One Piece can use Conqueror’s Haki in combat. So, Yamato having access to such a destructive ability puts her in an elite bracket.

Yamato Had Mastered Her Devil Fruit

In addition to having such powerful Haki, Yamato is also a Devil Fruit user. At some point in the past, she consumed the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami. It is a mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit, allowing her to transform into the white fox, which is known as the guardian deity of Wano.

Yamato can use both the full beast and hybrid forms, which shows that she has great mastery over her Devil Fruit. Yamato’s strength became evident when she fought Kaido in 1v1, a feat that only Luffy could boast of. Not only was she stalling Kaido, but she was able to deal damage to him. Now that her power level has been made clear, it’s time to discuss how she would have negatively affected the Monster Trio of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Yamato’s Impact On The Monster Trio

Oda Made The Correct Call By Keeping Yamato In Wano

The Monster Trio consists of Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. All three of them are extraordinary fighters that the rest of the crew members can rely on in times of peril. Being the captain, Luffy is obviously the strongest out of the three. He is followed by Zoro and then Sanji. Luffy has access to all three types of Haki and their advanced versions. Zoro can also use all kinds of Haki, but lacks mastery over them. Meanwhile, Sanji has access to just two types and, like Zoro, cannot use the advanced versions.

So, if Yamato were to join the crew, she would be the strongest member after Luffy. This would completely destroy the dynamic of the monster trio. Sanji would be pushed out of it completely, while Zoro would be moved down to the third spot. Thankfully, Oda showed his common sense and decided to keep Yamato in Wano. However, fans should not rule out the possibility of Yamato joining the Straw Hat Pirates sometime in the future.
