One Highly-Requested Helldivers 2 Feature Would Be Bittersweet

Helldivers 2 offers a variety of customization, from changing the name of one’s ship to choosing weapons and stratagems to bring on missions. While this is all good, the game can still be seen as lacking in customization when it comes to changing the player’s appearance. That could be why Helldivers 2 is looking into a highly-requested feature concerning armor, one that involves people being able to change the color scheme of the different pieces. Although it is a step towards more personal features regarding customization, it still might not meet the expectations of players, especially since it will be lacking something that players would likely have appreciated.

Helldivers 2‘s creative director and former CEO, Johan Pilestedt, responded to fans’ requests about being able to customize the in-game armor color with a hopeful answer stating it could be implemented in the future. As good as this may be for those looking forward to more customization options, it was also said that a transmog system wouldn’t be coming. Such a decision could leave a sour taste, as many fans have asked for the ability to wear any armor and change its appearance while retaining its effects.

Helldivers 2’s Possible Color Customization Feature Highlights the Need for Transmogs

The ability to customize the armor color is arguably one of the features or improvements most needed in Helldivers 2. However, it would have been even better if it also included the option to transmog different pieces to whatever anyone wishes. Pilestedt has stated that he isn’t fond of transmogrification, as it clashes with the vision of the in-game armor: having unique looks to emphasize their different purposes. Still, not including the feature still feels like a wasted opportunity for a variety of reasons:

  • Players not being able to transmog their armor to other sets that they already have can make it feel like they’re being forced to use what the game dictates is good for missions
  • Changing armor pieces and their colors at will while retaining their effects could have inspired a lot of creativity, which would have made people want to obtain even more armor to see what combinations they could come up with
  • Including a transmog system would have emphasized the possibilities of personal customization even more than mere color changes, raising community anticipation for things to come

Hopefully, Pilestedt and the rest of the team will reconsider adding transmogrification, since it could lead to players designing some of the coolest-looking armor in Helldivers 2 and attracting more people due to the freedom they can have with their appearance.

What Helldivers 2’s Future Color Customization Feature Can Do to Make Up for the Game Not Having a Transmog Option

Color customization could be a satisfying feature, but one that Helldivers 2 should consider updating once it’s in the game. If, at launch, it only allows players to choose between a limited number of color pallets, there wouldn’t be much to tinker with. However, if it’s updated to let people use a color wheel to choose whatever decorations they want, it opens up more possibilities for creativity and ensures more time is spent on it. It could even lead to Arrowhead Game Studios updating the feature to allow the repainting of the different details in armor pieces, such as the padding, gloves, heels, and so on. Such control over color can make up for the lack of a transmog option, offering options to players in a different way.

The lack of a transmog system might set an unfortunate precedent for Helldivers 2‘s customization options, but adding the ability to switch armor colors would at least be a good compromise. If updated to be more than just a simple color changer, it could become a major reason people will continue to play the game.
