Netflix brings out hundreds of great TV shows every year, but an equal number don’t make it past the first season and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the latest series to face the chopping block at the streamer.
Scott Pilgrim is a cult classic pop culture character who has gained popularity over the years from the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, the indie video game, and the 2010 Edgar Wright movie adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The story across these mediums follows a 23-year-old Canadian named Scott Pilgrim, the bass guitarist in a band named Sex Bob-Omb, who falls in love with the mysterious Ramona Flowers and learns he must defeat her seven evil exes if their relationship is to continue. In 2023, Netflix released an animated series titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off which served as an alternate retelling of the original graphic novel story, this time taken from the perspective of Ramona Flowers who is investigating Scott’s disappearance.

Scott Pilgrim Animated Series Canceled By Netflix
On November 20, which marked Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’s first anniversary, creator Bryan Lee O’Malley took to X to reveal that Netflix had not renewed the show for any further seasons. “We were recently informed that the show will NOT return,” O’Malley said. The creator added that it was an honor to work with the cast and crew of the series and that they had “only intended one season” of the series anyway. O’Malley added that many fans had been hoping for more, but wanted to clear up that pulling things together for a second season would have been “nearly impossible.”
“Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will NOT return. As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.”
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off wrapped up its story neatly in its final episode, with Ramona defeating Scott’s older self and the couple successfully returning to their present timeline where they are free to be together. The series also wrapped up the stories of the ensemble of characters and the evil exes. However, a post-credits scene did hint at the potential for more from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, with Gordon and Julie seen plotting against Scott and Ramona.
The Netflix series involved the majority of the actors from the 2010 film adaptation returning to reprise their roles, including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, and Aubrey Plaza, so it’s easy to see how difficult it would be to align all these cast members for more episodes. That being said, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was widely well received with 96% of reviews being positive on Rotten Tomatoes, and a win at the Critics Choice Award for Best Animated Series. Given its success, it might’ve seemed like an easy renewal for Netflix, but now it seems the series will definitively end with its eight-episode run.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is available to stream on Netflix.
