We’ve all gotten attached to one Sim or another after playing with them for hours on end, and The Sims 4: Life & Death has now given us a few different ways to continue playing on as our beloved favorites after Grim has come to get them.

It’s death Sim, but not as we know it.
One such way is through the process of Rebirth, an option available after death only to Sims who have made significant progress along their bucket list in life. Whether at the moment of death or after messing around as a ghost, being Reborn in The Sims 4: Life & Death is a miracle.
Progress The Soul’s Journey To Be Reborn After Death
No matter what your Sim has done in their life, Grim or one of his interns will come calling at some point, since every Sim will die eventually without the intervention of cheats, mods, or tweaking your game settings to change lifespans to infinite. If they’ve got the Chased by Death trait, this might happen sooner than later, but regardless, that time comes for everyone.
But if your Sim has made a significant amount of progress and achieved higher levels of the Soul’s Journey during their life, however long it was, they’ll be given the option to consider being reborn. Being able to do it, though, is no small feat: only Sims who have reached level six on their Soul’s Journey have the option to be reborn.
This means you’ll need to spend your Sim’s time on earth making progress on their bucket list, writing and achieving plenty of goals on it to help your Sim feel fulfilled on their individual Soul’s Journey. They’ll develop these goals naturally if you don’t write them manually, but no matter how each goal comes up, finishing it grants a huge number of points for the Soul’s Journey. You’ll also earn points by solving wants and needs, as well as by finishing your Sim’s aspirations while they’re alive.
Level six of the Soul’s Journey is labeled as “Dreams Fulfilled” and reaching this milestone is your Sim’s ticket to reincarnation. This is the final level of the Soul’s Journey for living Sims, meaning it’ll likely take your Sim a bit of work to get there. However, it also guarantees their ability to reincarnate when the time comes.
How To Be Reborn After Your Sim Dies
Provided you’ve reached that level of your Soul’s Journey, you’ll be able to be reborn in two ways. The first comes as soon as your Sim dies, when Grim’s pop-up appears asking if you want this Sim to be a playable ghost added to your household, or if you’d rather they become a free-roaming ghost allowed to carry on as normal. For Sims who’ve reached the “Dreams Fulfilled” milestone, though, they’ll have a third option listed, offering the chance to be reborn immediately.
You don’t have to be reborn right away if you’d like to play around for a while as a playable ghost Sim, though, experimenting with ghost mastery or attending your own funeral. After all, there are two benchmarks in the Soul’s Journey reserved exclusively for ghosts, and the final level of the Soul’s Journey actually offers some additional perks for your reborn Sim, so it may behoove you to continue playing this Sim as a while and choose to be reborn at will later on.
To do this, you’ll simply need to head over to the Baleful Bog, located not far from the clock tower in the Mourningvale neighborhood of Ravenwood, the world added in the Life & Death pack. While alive, your Sim can swim here to temporarily become a ghost, but if a ghost Sim chooses to swim here after death having reached the “Dreams Fulfilled” milestone in the Soul’s Journey at the very least, they’ll be able to select the Rebirth option with a phoenix icon beside it.
Regardless of when you choose to be reborn in The Sims 4: Life & Death, the game will double-check to ensure you’d like to move on at that given time, since plenty of things don’t carry over into your Sim’s new life. If you have stuff left to do as this Sim, you may want to put off being reborn.
How Does Rebirth Work?
Regardless of when you choose to be reborn, all progress made as that Sim is lost. This includes current relationships your Sim has being erased (though you’ll earn special moodlets for finding these Sims again after reincarnation), your household funds either being left for living family members or split up according to your Sim’s will if they had one made before death, and any skills or achievements this Sim made during their original life. In your new life, you’ll lose all progress toward aspirations, too.
However, there’s plenty you’ll receive as a perk for reincarnating as a new Sim in The Sims 4: Life & Death! As soon as you confirm you’d like to have this Sim be reborn, you’ll be allowed to choose the family into which you’d like to be reborn. This allows you to seamlessly begin playing as this family if you’d like to continue playing as this Sim, even in their new form. You can choose any family from any world you’ve got unlocked, as long as there’s space in the household.
After choosing your new family, you’ll be brought into Create-a-Sim to design your Sim’s reincarnated form, as if you’re making a fully new Sim. You can opt to have this new Sim grow up to look exactly like your previous Sim, mix things up and play with the genetics of the family you’re moving into after rebirth, or make a new Sim from scratch as you see fit.
You’ll be able to choose your new Sim’s age, traits, likes and dislikes, and aspiration as if creating a new Sim, and once you’re ready, your game will load into the new family’s household, and your newly reborn Sim’s life will begin anew!
If you choose to reincarnate as a younger Sim, before adult skill progression unlocks, you’ll find that some of your toddler skills and childhood skills will be unlocked with some progression as soon as your new life begins. This is decided based on your old Sim’s skills and interests, and the progress they made on their bucket list before reincarnation.
How To Recall Your Past Life
What happens from here depends on how far you made it on your Sim’s bucket list before choosing to have them go through the Rebirth process. While achieving the “Dreams Fulfilled” milestone in the bucket list makes Rebirth possible in The Sims 4: Life & Death, you’ll find your new life to be even richer if you’ve completed the entire bucket list and reached the final level, “The Big Picture.”
Doing so gives your Sim the Burning Soul trait, a bonus hidden trait added in the expansion, unlike the visible ones you can choose from in CAS when assigning traits to a Sim as normal. Any Sim who gets reborn with the Burning Soul trait will have two additional perks in their new lives. They can:
- Retain a trait from their former life upon rebirth into a new one, giving them an additional trait slot as an adult Sim. To do this, click on your Sim and choose Recall Past Life from the list of self-interactions.
- Peer Into Soul to recover some further traits from their previous life by using any mirror.
Regardless of whether you choose to retain your old Sim’s traits, you may find your new Sim having special memories and moodlets upon meeting Sims you knew in your previous life or inspecting your own grave. Friends and family will elicit different moodlets, while you may even find special moodlets for reuniting with lovers from a past life. Playing with the Get Together pack installed as well will only deepen these memories and bonds in your new life.
