How To Get The Missing Idol In Loco Motive

How To Get The Missing Idol In Loco Motive

After the twists and turns of the previous few sections of Loco Motive, Part Three ends on something of a gory cliffhanger. Herman Merman, novelist and wannabe detective, ends up skewered by a nasty accident during a game of Knifey, Stab, Stab. Luckily for him, a certain doctor is aboard the Reuss Express.

He still has his goal, though, and that is to find out what Mr. Liu is planning for Lady Unterwald and her considerable fortune (that she may or may not still possess). This Part may shed some light on the fateful night that leads to Lady Unterwald’s untimely demise.

How To Find The Missing Hand Idol

The order of idle hands in Loco Motive.

We begin this Part with a rather explicit task: to find the missing hand idol. This requires two steps:

  • Learning what inscription was on the idol.
  • Learning the gesture the idol was making.

Once you’ve learned both features, you can speak to Brian (the man at the desk to the right of the secret society’s main area) and tell him what you know to get the Idol.

You can figure this out without much fuss at all. Leave the secret society and head to the Lobby Carriage, all the way to the right of the train.

Here, you’ll find a large train set, underneath which is a plaque that is too small to read. Use your magnifying glass on the plaque to read it – it reads, “Dedicated to my beloved wife, my dear Junebug.”

How To Learn The Idol’s Gesture

Back at the secret society, examine the painting behind the meeting table. You’ll notice that there’s a smudge there, covering up the hand, that needs cleaning. Nothing you have currently will work.

Leave the meeting room and head to the Dining Carriage. Pick up a napkin from the bar counter and then rummage through the briefcase left underneath one of the dining tables. You’ll find a bottle of surgical spirits.

Combine the napkin and the surgical spirit, and then use that back in the meeting room on the large painting.

The gesture is ‘a single finger being held out‘.

Once you know both features of the Idol, tell Brian what they are and he’ll present it to you. Give it to the society’s leader in the centre of the table to progress.

A cutscene will give you your next task: to find a way to complete the voting process by waking up Mr. Masson.

How To Make Mr. Masson Vote

The empty kitchen in Loco Motive.

This puzzle is actually rather simple to work out – while you might think you need coffee from the train bar, Masson won’t drink that.

Instead, head to the kitchen and use your paper cup on the soup – the one you spiked with chilli earlier. See where we’re heading with this?

With the cup of soup, head back to the meeting room and give it to Mr. Masson. Initiate another vote by speaking to the society’s leader.

Leave the meeting room, and your next task will confront you immediately in the form of Arista Gudrun.

How To Fix The Hearing Horn

Arista and Herman in Loco Motive.

Arista will give you the right clues to this puzzle – you’ll need the help of the band from earlier since they’re the ones who know musical instruments well enough.

Before you head to the backstage area, though, head to the kitchen and pick up the butter from the kitchen island.

Use your butter on the hand cream you acquired earlier to make a slippery mixture. Then, use the slippery mixture on the knife you also ‘acquired’ earlier.

Return to the backstage area, and you’ll automatically talk to the band. Ask them to take a look at the horn, and then try to get them to let you use their reed to fix it. You’ll need to win a game of Knifey Stab Stab to get the reed.

As long as the knife you have is coated in both slippery items, you can easily win the game. Just play the band for the reed, and they’ll automatically use your knife.

Return the fixed horn to Arista Gudrun, who is sitting just outside the backstage area.

Dealing With Mr. Liu

After the cutscene, you’ll be back in Lady Unterwald’s quarters with a crushed Mr. Liu. Examine him, and you’ll get a close-up of his hand, which is holding something.

Use the slippery mixture that you made a few minutes ago on Mr. Liu’s hand to loosen it, and examine the photograph you find.

You’ll then receive your next orders – to lure Arthur out of his room and deliver some items to him.

Head to the Sleeper Carriage and get all the way to the end of the car. Use your toy lockpick on the fusebox there and disconnect the wiring to lure Arthur out of his room.

You’ll automatically slip inside his room.

Hang the blue suit up on the hanging hanger to progress. A timeskip will lead you to the final puzzle of this Part.

What To Do While Disguised As Lady Unterwald

The Lobby carriage in Loco Motive.

You’ll begin this sequence in Lady Unterwald’s quarters, with her boots in your inventory. Start by leaving the room and entering the bathroom to the right. Pick up the plunger here.

Now, make your way to the Sleeper Carriage and approach the twins trying to break into Herman’s room. You’ll need another route inside.

Keep heading to the end of the train. While you’re in the kitchen, pick up the plunger hanging above the sink, and then head out the door to the very end of the train.

Outside the train in Loco Motive.

Combine both plungers with Lady Unterwald’s boots to turn them into climbing boots, and then use them on the ladder outside the train to end this Part.
