Key Takeaways
- Helldivers 2 might soon see the arrival of the long-awaited Illuminate faction, according to a recent Steam update.
- On the Helldivers 2 SteamDB page, a changelist with 30 new depots was recently added, all of which are tagged “gameplay_illuminates”.
- It’s the surest sign yet that an Illuminate invasion is imminent, but we still don’t exactly when.
Helldivers 2 has been in a relative state of stagnancy over the past few weeks, with the arrival of the DSS providing a somewhat controversial reprieve from liberating the same collection of planets over and over again. It’s had some players wondering exactly when we’re going to get significant updates on the Galactic War again, and exactly where the heck the long-awaited, heavily-rumored Illuminate faction will be added.
We’re still waiting for official news from Arrowhead on the Illuminate front, as the studio hasn’t really admitted it’s coming – despite all the leaks – but it also seems like it’s making almost no effort to hide the fact the Illuminate is coming. In a recent update to the Helldivers 2 SteamDB page, spotted by Reddit user Dangerous-Return5937, 30 depots were added to a new changelist around nine hours ago, all of which are tagged as “gameplay_illuminates”.
Helldivers 2 Steam Update Hints At Imminent Illuminate Arrival
Some of these depots have other interesting terms attached to them, such as “DLC”, though we have no way of telling exactly what’s being added. However, it does pretty much confirm that Arrowhead is now fully preparing to add the Illuminate to Helldivers 2. We’ve had various leaks of models and in-game screenshots over the past couple of months, but this is the first indicator we’ve had that the Illuminate is about to be added to the game.

Helldivers 2 Should Have Revealed The Illuminate Months Ago
Players are just going in circles waiting for something worthwhile to happen.
The real question is when? Helldivers 2 currently has no major overarching goal at the minute, as Operation Balance of Liberty simply has us using the DSS to help liberate planets while avoiding getting our own limbs blown off in the process. It’s possible that the Illuminate could be the next major plot line added to the game, such as the building of the DSS or the destruction of Meridia earlier this year.
In fact, the big black hole where Meridia once was has long been rumored as a potential invasion point for the Illuminate faction, which is thought to be extinct in the Helldivers 2 universe. A lot of players reckon the black hole is actually a wormhole though, and that the Terminid-infested planet was sent to another, more Illuminate populated area of the galaxy, and some very ticked-off aliens are about to strike back. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
