GTA 6 Fans Somehow Shocked Trailer 2 Moon Theory Was Wrong

Key Takeaways

  • A section of the Grand Theft Auto 6 community believed Rockstar was using the moon to communicate with them.
  • They weren’t.
  • The community is distraught.

The Grand Theft Auto 6 community is awash in memes right now after the so-called “moon theory” was proven to be incorrect. This theory was an attempt by some fans to use the lunar cycle of visible moons in Grand Theft Auto Online promotional material to predict when Rockstar would release the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6.

Look to the Moon…

It’s not as far-fetched as it sounds, because a different moon theory correctly predicted the announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6’s initial trailer. Not the actual trailer, mind, but the announcement that revealed when the trailer was arriving. Essentially, one year ago, Rockstar released a GTA Online image featuring the moon in a waning gibbous lunar cycle. Lo and behold, the next day our real-life moon was a waning gibbous, Rockstar announced the game’s first trailer.

One year on, proponents of the moon theory were hoping that lightning would strike twice when Rockstar released a different GTA Online image that featured the moon rising high above Darnell Bros’ Garment Factory, once again in a waning gibbous. Naturally, the righteous and dedicated followers of the moon begin spreading the word of their god: something is going to happen during the world’s next waning gibbous: November 22.

Unfortunately, Take-Two tends to make its announcements at 9 am ET, which has now come and gone. The GTA 6 subreddit is now filled with memes of fellow fans making fun of people who started to wholeheartedly believe in the moon theory. It’s indicative of just how excited people are for Grand Theft Auto 6 that they’re willing to believe in anything if it means they’re going to get a crumb of news in the near future.

As it stands, Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release during the final two quarters of 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar isn’t exactly known for delivering on its first release dates, but financial reports from Take-Two suggest that the parent company is confident that its studio will deliver on time.
