What To Expect From Warcraft Rumble's PC Port



Warcraft Rumble has just turned one year old, and its anniversary coincides with many other franchise milestones. Along with other announcements brought by a celebratory Warcraft Direct, Blizzard revealed that Warcraft Rumble will be coming to PC.




Not only has Rumble now been on the market for a whole year, but the Warcraft franchise as a whole has also turned 30. Every corner of the series has been lavished with Blizzard’s attention and new content, with Warcraft Rumble being no exception. Game Rant was able to sit down with art director Jeremy Collins and executive producer Vik Saraf, both of whom were able to illuminate some specifics about Rumble‘s upcoming PC port, which will be arriving in beta form on December 10.

I have played plenty of Hearthstone over the years, but it’s been out for a long time now, and Warcraft Rumble feels more fresh and interesting to me, even if it does pull from other established mobile game genres.

Warcraft Rumble Devs Talk About How The Game’s PC Port Will Look

Account Sharing

Just like Hearthstone before it, Warcraft Rumble will allow for account sharing between mobile and PC versions of the title. Saraf noted how much of the progress a player makes in Rumble is stored on their Battle.net ID, which allows for a seamless transition between versions.


The way our game has been architected is heavily server-authoritative, which means that a lot of your actions and progressions are stored on the server and attached to your Battle.net ID. If, for example, you started playing the mobile version and logged in to your Battle.net ID, when you log onto PC using that same Battle.net ID you’ll come right into the same experience.”

Collins elaborated on the feeling that Warcraft Rumble‘s PC port is planned to elicit, stating, “You can kinda just pick it up, play, and then when you get home later on you can pick it up on Battle.net. It’s designed to be a seamless experience between devices.” It’s clear from these comments that the port is being viewed as a way to bring new fans into an existing playerbase, all while keeping old fans engaged with Rumble as often as possible.

Accessibility And Graphical Touch-Ups

Warcraft Rumble won’t be pursuing the fidelity of other Warcraft titles when put on PC, but it will be taking advantage of more robust hardware. Collins was able to articulate how the art team was able to show off the true scope of Rumble‘s maps, all while not granting PC players an unfair boon.


“The kind of cool thing that happened when we decided we were going to make a PC version of
Rumble
was, like, we have all these different maps with different aspect ratios based on whatever device you’re looking at on mobile.

Because of that fact, we’re actually able to take the widest aspect ratio we have for each of the maps and give them to you in PC. It doesn’t necessarily give you a tactical advantage, because everyone sees the same amount of map, but now on PC the borders are widened on quite a few maps. You can see a lot of the artwork we put on the edge of the map to sell that sort of environmental storytelling thing we’re so big about here at Blizzard, making spaces feel lived in by the characters.”


Collins also added that, in addition to graphical upgrades to Warcraft Rumble, there will also be some accessibility changes on PC to accommodate that playerbase. He mentioned how the team had to “change a lot of the art to be able to accommodate for hover states” since the original mobile game didn’t have to account for hovering over units with a cursor. He also went on to mention that players can “hit 1-2-3-4 and that’ll basically queue up the four units that are in [their] tray at the bottom.” Both of these tweaks, though small, highlight the attention paid to the switch in format.
