New Half-Life Opposing Force fan remake looks just as good as Black Mesa

Opposing Force is quietly one of the best Half-Life games. I like the simplicity of Blue Shift. On the contrary, the overarching plot and the action set pieces of the Half-Life 2 saga still feel fresh 20 years later. Alyx has the tech. The original Half-Life is the original Half-Life. But Adrian Shephard’s story is the funniest, the most spectacular, and it has an M249 SAW gun. We haven’t seen or heard from the unfortunate HECU corporal since 1999, but now, at last, he’s coming back. A complete Half-Life Opposing Force remake has just been revealed, and it looks just as thorough and professional as Crowbar Collective’s Black Mesa.

Created by a team of modders and developers under the name Warp Sync, Fubar is a complete, top-to-bottom remake of Half-Life Opposing Force. Every level, weapon, enemy, and NPC is being reimagined and redesigned, and the entire game is built using the Source engine – essentially, it does for Opposing Force what Black Mesa did for the first Half-Life. The inaugural trailer shows off the opening section of the FPS game, when Shephard awakens in the infirmary. In the original game, it serves as a short introduction to the events of the resonance cascade. In Fubar, it’s much bigger and more detailed. Take a look.

As well as remaking every level, Fubar will also include some new mechanics and updates to Opposing Force’s combat. Some of the puzzles will be redesigned, too – from what I’ve seen so far, it looks like Opposing Force if it were released today. There’s no launch date yet, but while we wait on Fubar, there’s also a complete remake of Half-Life Blue Shift, which just got a gigantic, and very impressive, new chapter. And of course, Valve itself just released a fresh version of Half-Life 2.
