Season seven of My Hero Academia is the penultimate season of the hit anime. With the war for the fate of Japan, and the world, kicking off almost immediately, this season offered many tense battles, moments of joy, and plenty of surprises.

From character deaths, to shocking revelations, and heartfelt moments, this season is arguably the best the show has been in a long time. After this action-packed season with lots of stakes, we can’t wait to see how the final season shapes up in the wake of season seven.

Star And Stripe: Her Quirk, Death, And Middle Finger To All For One

The end of Season 6 teased the number one hero in America coming over to assist our heroes. Season 7 begins with the Amazonian heroine flying towards Japan with her escort of military brothers as they meet Shigaraki in the skies of the Pacific.

Everything about these first two episodes was filled with suspense and epic moments. From the reveal of how powerful New World Order is, to her backstory going all the way back to the first movie, to her upsetting demise. It was shocking to see this brand-new, extremely likable and interesting character not only lose their first battle, but die in the process. However, things do not end on the worst note, as Star has a final middle finger for the villain, making her quirk attack all the quirks inside All For One’s power until it’s exhausted.

Toga Uses Jin’s Blood And Activates Sad Man’s Parade

In Season 5, it was discovered that Himiko Toga can not only take the appearance of whoever’s blood she takes, but, if she loves them enough, she can even use their quirk as well. Before the war kicks off in Season 7, Dabi gives Toga a vial of Twice’s blood.

At the height of every battle taking place, and right when Kurogiri gets freed from the hospital by Spinner, he appears before Toga and asks what she desires. She then takes the vial of Twice’s blood, and activates a massive Sad Man’s Parade attack across all the battlefields. This massively changes the game in favor of the villains, and makes for a nearly unstoppable force of bodies for them to get through.

Deku’s Final Quirk: Gear Shift

Season 5 introduced the fact that One For All actually has multiple quirks inside of it; not only did One For All gain power as it transferred from person to person over the years, but it stored and powered-up the quirks of whoever had wielded it before Deku.

Starting with Blackwhip, the rest of the quirks Deku gained are shown, including Fa Jin, Float, and Danger Sense. Finally, in the battle with Shigaraki in Season 7, Deku’s final hidden quirk, Gear Shift, is revealed. Originally, this quirk was only useful for shifting the momentum of small objects, but with the power of One For All and being transferred from person to person, it now far surpasses its initial capabilities.

We Finally See Hagakure

Hagakure is a member of Class 1-A who hasn’t had much opportunity to shine. Well, unless she reflects Aoyama’s Naval Laser. Not every hero gets their moment in the spotlight with a cast as large as My Hero, but one of the reasons for this in Hakagure’s case is that she is completely invisible, except for whatever clothes she is wearing.

In Season 7, when Deku stumbles upon Aoyama in the woods with his parents and realizes he is the UA traitor, Hagakure is there as well. She breaks down, pleading with Aoyama to explain himself and that they’ve worked together on missions, and as Aoyama begins to activate his Naval Laser in a panic, the light reflects and the first ever glimpse of what she really looks like in all seven seasons is shown. This was a short, but unexpected and shocking moment in an already shocking scene, and is almost surreal to see.

Dabi Has Rei’s Quirk

One question that has been long-posed in the series is, how the hell is Dabi still alive? He’s being held together with stitches and his fire, which was meant to end him long ago, keeps burning hotter and hotter. The characters even bring up multiple times that he should be toast (pun intended) by now.

During Dabi’s battle with Shoto, Shoto reveals that he has perfected the harmony between his two quirks, called Flashfire Fist: Phosphor, and he can use both quirks at once, using the ice to cool his body when activating his fire, and vice versa. It’s then revealed, after he recovers from his defeat to Shoto, that Dabi can do this too, and he has had Rei’s quirk inside him this whole time, just like Shoto. Not only is this a huge reveal as it answers the question of how Dabi hasn’t burned himself up yet, but it shows Endeavor that he ruined his family trying over and over to make the ‘perfect’ quirk, when his first child had it all along.

All For One Has Rewind

All For One can steal quirks, and has a seemingly limitless stockpile of various quirks in his body. Despite this obstacle, our heroes fight tirelessly against him and Endeavor sacrifices everything to hit him with a massive, close-quarters Prominence Burn. This would actually have been enough to defeat the Demon Lord, had it not been for the final ace up his sleeve of quirk cards.

Eri’s quirk, Rewind, allows her to rewind someone in time to reverse any damage done, with the caveat that this requires extreme control, and can rewind someone until they are nothing, if left unchecked. After Endeavor’s attack, All For One reveals that he and Doctor Garaki were able to use one of Overhaul’s bullets to reverse-engineer the quirk and give it to All For One. Now, All For One does not have control of this quirk, so he is slowly rewinding until his eventual death. But this gives him more than enough time to wipe out the heroes in his way, and make his way to Shigaraki in order to fully take over his body.

The Return Of Gentle Criminal, La Brava, And Lady Nagant

Once Deku arrives at the Coffin in the Sky to fight Shigaraki, things could not be more hopeless for our heroes there. Bakugo is lying dead with Edgeshot attempting to exchange his life to resuscitate him, Suneater and the big three’s strongest attack was shrugged off, and Mirko is missing even more limbs. Deku is here, but things are not looking bright, even with his use of Gear Shift, which leaves him unable to breathe for a short time. Oh, and the floating battlefield is also falling out of the sky.

Just when things seem utterly hopeless, multiple characters return: La Brava, attempting to hack into the battlefield and fix it; Gentle Criminal, who uses his quirk to keep the structure in the air as long as possible; and Lady Nagant, still covered in bandages and wounds from her near-death, who uses her quirk to fire at Shigaraki and stop him from using Decay on the structure. These moments one after another make for a surprising, emotion-filled episode that makes things feel like they might just work out.

Aoyama Is The Traitor

Since the first season of My Hero Academia, when the League of Villains attacked Class 1-A on their field trip, there has been discussion of a traitor in the midst of UA. It is revealed at the beginning of Season 7 that the traitor has been Aoyama, also known as Can’t Stop Twinkling.

It turns out that Aoyama was actually born quirkless, and he was given his Naval Laser quirk by All For One. Since then, the family has been at the beck and call of the world’s greatest villain, forcing him to provide the League with information or he and his parents will be killed. This has been something that has been built up for a long time, and some fans even thought that it was forgotten, but this reveal and the episodes that follow made the wait worth it.

Armored All Might

Toshinori Yagi, All Might, the Symbol of Peace. Ever since his climactic rematch with All For One in Season 3, Toshinori has taken more of a teaching and guiding role, as he no longer has One For All and is still permanently damaged from his battle with the villain many years ago. But this is a war, and Toshinori has always been a hero, even without a quirk.

Thus, we get Armored All Might. The season finale of Season 7 shows us what Toshinori has been working on ever since he lost One For All, getting help from David Shield (a character we met all the way back in the first movie), and he has a fully armored suit to help him fight All For One. Not only that, but all of its capabilities are named after the heroes of Class 1-A that have helped inspire him, making a beautiful full-circle moment for the hero that inspired all of them to become heroes.

Bakugo’s Death

Being a war, and also nearly the end of the series, it’s expected to have some casualties in the battles to come. While there were many surprises, deaths, and grievous injuries, none came as unexpected and hit harder than the apparent death of Katsuki Bakugo.

Taking heavy damage in the battle against Shigaraki, the explosive hero pushes on past his limits and unlocks a new level of power with his quirk, moving at, well, explosive speed and dealing damage in large areas. However, it’s not enough, and Bakugo eventually succumbs to his wounds and an attack from Shigaraki, and lies dead, his heart no longer beating, with his prized All Might Card covered in his blood nearby. The hero Edgeshot refuses to take this, and begins to suture the wounds in Bakugo’s lungs and heart and tries to pump his heart beating again, which will cost Edgeshot his life in return, but as of the season ending, we don’t yet know the final fate of this beloved character.
