It’s the almost-final-dungeon in Metaphor: ReFantazio, and we’ve got a guide to it. Here’s the Skybound Avatar.

Entering this stage of the game also unlocks three Trial of the Dragon quests, which promise forbidden power if you are able to conquer them. However, completing these three quests will unlock a fourth, final quest, which is definitely the hardest of the bunch. Below, we’ll take a look at how to complete this quest from start to finish, including how to beat the Elegy of the Soul.

How To Start Trial Of The Dragon: Essence Of Power

The Trial of the Dragon: Essence of Power quest automatically starting after slaying the third dragon.

The final Trial of the Dragon quest will automatically be accepted after clearing all of the other ones, including Mad Mischief, Bygone Legacy, and Heroes’ Rest. Once you’ve finished the third Trial of the Dragon, starting from the next day, you can return to the Dragon Temple to undertake Essence of Power.

Unlike the other Trials of the Dragon, you don’t need to re-explore the Dragon Temple for this quest. Simply head to the location and use the Divine Altar Path shortcut to head straight to the room of the boss fight.

How To Beat Elegy Of The Soul

A party comprised of the Protagonist, Junah, Eupha, and Hulkenberg fighting the Elegy of the Soul.

Elegy of the Soul is a level 75 boss with no elemental strengths or weaknesses. Instead, every turn it will swap to a new Archetype and use skills of that Archetype, so you can roughly expect what you’ll see during every turn of the battle.

Character

Archetype

Formation

Strategy

Protagonist

Prince

Front/Back

Provides consistent damage through Royal Slash or support through inherited skills.

Junah

Royal Masked Dancer

Back

With the Trickster or Saviour Mask, provide debuffs or healing to the team while inflicting one-time weaknesses with dances.

Strohl/Hulkenberg

Warlord

Front/Back

Use Formation abilities to buff the party’s attack and defense. Either Strohl or Hulkenberg can use this Archetype.

Basilio

Royal Berserker

Front

Deals consistent damage through Wanton Destruction, inflicting a one-time weakness to Strike with every use.

Heismay is also a good option with Royal Thief and Noble Thief’s Soul, which will deplete all enemy turn icons when he dodges an attack.

Since the boss uses all kinds of elemental attacks, debuffs, and status effects, there’s no point in specializing your party’s equipment for anything in particular. Use the best gear you have that complements the chosen party member’s Archetype and you’ll be good.

However, whatever you do, do not use equipment that can repel attacks. If you go into the battle with this equipment the boss will immediately and repeatedly cast Armageddon’s Final Sire, dealing 9,999 Almighty damage to your party.

Battle Strategy

As mentioned above, Elegy of Souls will swap to a different Archetype in a predetermined order every turn, starting with Seeker and ending with Prince. Here is the order it will swap in.

  1. Seeker
  2. Warrior
  3. Knight
  4. Thief
  5. Masked Dancer
  6. Summoner
  7. Berserker
  8. Prince

After Prince, it will restart at Seeker on the next turn. If Elegy of Souls makes it through three full cycles, it will cast Armageddon’s Final Sire until your party is defeated. This means that you are on a time limit for this fight; if you take too long to kill the boss, it will wipe you out.

The main strategy for this fight is similar to most other bosses. Keep your buffs up, keep debuffs on the boss, and create and exploit one-time weaknesses wherever possible. Basilio is great for exploiting one-time weaknesses with Wanton Destruction, which can deal massive damage every turn.

Be sure to utilize Formations throughout the battle to mitigate or boost damage. The Warlord’s Formation skills will directly move all party members to either the back or the front, so be sure to move them back if needed. For example, you’ll want Basilio hitting Wanton Destructions from the front row, and Junah is better off in the back row to reduce the damage she takes.

After Elegy of the Soul begins its third Archetype cycle, it will start using Hero’s Cry giving itself four extra Turn Icons every turn. You’ll definitely need to make sure you have your defensive buffs up at all times to reduce the extra incoming damage each turn.

This is where Heismay and Noble Thief’s Soul come in very handy, especially if you have him inherit Knight’s Proclamation to draw the boss’s attacks to himself.

It may take a few tries, but this fight isn’t necessarily as hard as it first may seem. Stick to your usual boss tactics and you should get through this fight. If you find yourself running out of time and dying to Armageddon’s Final Sire, try to level up a bit more and try again, time permitting.

Quest Rewards

Defeating Elegy of the Soul and completing this quest will reward you with the Radiant Crystal accessory and the Dragon’s Legacy sword. The Radiant Crystal increases all stats by eight, while the Dragon’s Legacy makes all attacks Almighty. This will be one of the strongest weapons for the protagonist for the remainder of the game.
