Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those benchmark games fans rush to check out when they upgrade their gaming hardware. From its disastrous launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to its 2.0 overhaul and excellent Phantom Liberty expansion last year, the open-world RPG has undergone an impressive makeover in the last few years. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the PS5 Pro will be showcasing the game’s best-looking improvements anytime soon.
While a heap of games have been enhanced for Sony’s mid-generation refresh console at launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is not among them and might not ever be. “We currently have no plans for PS5 Pro patch,” the game’s X account tweeted November 20 in response to one player salivating over the prospect of seeing Night City lit up with more graphical bells and whistles. Fans were not too happy in the mentions.
CD Projekt Red not working on a PS5 Pro update could simply be a result of the studio being heads down in other projects right now, which include multiple Witcher games, including The Witcher 4, as well as very early planning on Cyberpunk 2. It’s not clear how much time and resources it would take to patch the game to take advantage of the new console’s PSSR upscaling for higher resolutions at higher framerates. Certainly there are a few games out there that have struggled to make it work properly at launch.
One of the big updates to the look and feel of Cyberpunk 2077‘s sprawling metropolis was ray-tracing. On PC, the game has ray-traced shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, and other flourishes that really make it pop. On PS5, the game only has the shadows bit, and only while running at 30fps. Getting Cyberpunk 2077 running with more ray-tracing features might not be worth $700, but it’s certainly the type of luxury people already spending that much on a new console would probably be happy to have.
