One very late-game possible addition is Minsc, who many players will recognize from previous Baldur’s Gate games.

Updated by Rei Penber on ///: Minsc is perhaps the hardest companion to unlock in BG3, and because of that, it makes unlocking and using him not worth it, especially when he only comes around in Act 3. However, if the player still wants to give Minsc a chance, multiclassing might be a good option to make him more interesting.

Who Is Minsc And Where To Recruit Him

Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3

Minsc is a recurring character from the Baldur’s Gate franchise. Because of that, this character will be familiar to many fans of the old games. Unfortunately, getting him might be a bit tricky.

Minsc will be the last companion the player will recruit in their playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. Minsc will only be available to the player in Act 3, which is Baldur’s Gate 3’s last act, meaning he’ll only be acquired towards the very end of the game, and this might make using him less appealing to the player.

Besides that, the player must also have another companion to even hope of recruiting him, that character being Jaheira, a companion the player can recruit in Act 2, provided she survives the events that happen in that Act.

With Jaheira alongside the player, recruiting Minsc becomes a possibility. The player must also make sure to complete the Aid The Underduke quest.

Default Minsc

Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3

Minsc was a kind-hearted—but rather addled— Rashemaar warrior that enjoyed many adventures across the Sword Coast and beyond. He joined many adventuring parties throughout the 14th and 15th centuries DR, including the Heroes of Baldur’s Gate. Mins was famously known for his habit of talking to a hamster called Boo, whom he believed was a miniature giant space hamster, despite no one else ever witnessing any evidence of this.

Minsc is one of the few human companions the player will have in their roster, being the third after Gale and Wyll. When it comes to his class, he’s a Ranger, which is a class unique to him among the companions.

Minsc’s background in the game is that of the Folk Hero. With this background, he will unlock proficiencies in Animal Handling and Survival.

One unique thing about Minsc is his ability to summon Boo, his trusted hamster. This is unique to him and can be useful. Boo can be summoned through Find Familiar: Boo.

Best Minsc Build

Minsc from Baldur's Gate 3

Despite being a very late-game addition for the player’s team, if built well, Minsc can still be a good character that the player can make use of.

As a Ranger, at level 1, he will receive the class features Favored Enemy and Natural Environment. With these 2, he can pick one of the features each provides.

For Favored Enemy, he has these options:

  • Bounty Hunter
  • Keeper of the Veil
  • Mage Breaker
  • Ranger Knight
  • Sanctified Stalker

Out of these, take the Bounty Hunter option.

When it comes to Natural Environment, here are the options:

  • Beast Tamer
  • Urban Trickster
  • Wasteland Wanderer: Cold
  • Wasteland Wanderer: Fire
  • Wasteland Wanderer: Poison

Out of these, pick either Wasteland Wanderer: Fire.

Then at Level 2, level 1 Ranger spellcasting is unlocked. The player also gets to choose a fighting style, notably, Archery, Defense, Dueling, or Two Weapon Fighting. From these, Two Weapon Fighting will be the most ideal.

At level 3, the player must pick Minsc’s subclass. They have the choice between these three:

  • Beast Master
  • Gloom Stalker
  • Hunter

Out of these subclasses, it’s recommended to go with the Beast Master. This subclass is very versatile and will be of big use. The player could also go for Gloom Stalker, if they want a more stealthy build, overall all the Ranger subclasses are solid.

  • Sentinel. This will allow Minsc to attack an enemy who targets an ally if they’re within melee range. The attacked enemy can also no longer move for the rest of the turn.
  • Tough. Hit Point max increases by 2 each level up.

At Level 5, he unlocks Level 2 Ranger spellcasting as well as Extra Attack. With his subclass he also gets Companion’s Bond, making his familiar even more useful.

At Level 6, he picks an additional option from Favoured Enemy and Natural Explorer. The player should go with Mage Breaker and Beast Tamer.

Best Multiclass Build For Minsc

Baldurs-Gate-3-How-To-Recruit-Minsc-High-Harper-01

Minsc is a character the player gets far too late in the game, making him unworthy for many players. A good way to make use of him, however, is to Multiclass him and make him more interesting.

The most optimal Multiclass build for Minsc will be a mix between three classes: the Ranger, the Barbarian, and the Fighter at 6 – 3 – 3.

To start off with Minsc, he will be a Ranger. At level 1 as a Ranger, he gets to choose one Favored Enemy and one Natural Explorer. Bounty Hunter and Wasteland Wanderer: Fire, are some good options to start with.

Continuing to Level 2 as a Ranger, the player will be able to unlock the Level 1 Ranger spellcasting, with some good spell options being Ensnaring Strike and Hail of Thorns. The player also gets to choose a fighting style, with four options being Archery, Defense, Dueling, or Two Weapon Fighting. The best option depends on what kind of fighting style they like to utilize Minsc with, but archery is a good one.

Now at level 3 as a Ranger, Minsc gets to pick a Ranger subclass. He has the option between Beast Master, Gloom Stalker, and Hunter. The choice between Beast Master and Gloom Stalker can be tough, but overall, Beast Master might be the better option here. This gives Minsc the class action Ranger’s Companion and allows him to summon a beast companion to fight alongside him.

Now, for the next level up, the player would want to switch over to the Fighter Class, making Minsc a Ranger 3 – Fighter 1. The player gets to choose another fighting style for Minsc, Two Weapon fighting would work well here. He also unlocks Second Wind, an amazing class action that allows him to heal himself as a bonus action.

Continuing on to level 2 as a Fighter, making him a Ranger 3 – Fighter 2, he unlocks Action Surge. This allows him to gain an extra action, which is a very valuable action to have.

Now, when Minsc becomes a Ranger 3 – Fighter 3, he will finally be able to pick his fighter subclass. He has the option between the Champion, the Battle Master, or the Eldritch Knight. The real choice here is between the Battle Master and the Champion, but overall, the player should go with the Champion to get an improved Critical Hit.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Hardest Bosses In The Game

Baldur’s Gate 3 has some scarily challenging boss fights. For these threats, players should be prepared and have their tactics honed.

Now, the player will switch Minsc over from a Fighter to a Barbarian, making him a Ranger 3 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 1. At this level, he will unlock Unarmored Defense, as well as Rage. Rage will allow him to become stronger and have an advantage on strength checks and saving throws.

He should continue to level 2 as a Barbarian, making him a Ranger 3 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 2. Here, he will get Danger Sense, which can help him avoid traps, and other bad inconveniences. He also gets Reckless Attack, which gives him and enemies who attack him an advantage on attack rolls.

For the final level as a Barbarian, Minsc will become a Ranger 3 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 3. He will unlock an additional Rage Charge, and will be able to pick a Barbarian Subclass. He can choose between the Berserker, the Wildheart, and the Wild Magic. For Minsc, his best option will be the Wildheart. This will give him the option to choose one bestial heart. For Minsc, Rage: Bear Heart will be the best option for him. Minsc also learns Speak With Animals.

Now, the player should Switch Minsc back to being a Ranger. Minsc will become Ranger 4 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 3. At this level, he just gets a feat. Tough will be a good option for him.

Moving on to level 5 as a Ranger, making him Ranger 5 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 3, Minsc will unlock level 2 Ranger spellcasting. Some good options for spells here include Spike Growth and Barkskin. Minsc also finally unlocks Extra Attack. This will allow him to make another extra attack. Minsc also gets Companion’s Bond, and this subclass feature allows the player’s companion to become stronger and sturdier.

Finally, at level 6 as a Ranger, making the player Ranger 6 – Fighter 3 – Barbarian 3, the player will unlock another additional Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer Environment. Anyone here goes, but if the player doesn’t want to think too much about this, they can go with Keeper of the Veil and Wasteland Wanderers: Poison.
