The Callisto Protocol Gets New Update

The Callisto Protocol Gets New Update

Key Takeaways

  • The Callisto Protocol’s latest update adds support for the PS5 Pro.
  • PS5 Pro users can play The Callisto Protocol at 8K 30fps, and full ray tracing is enabled for every mode.
  • 4K 60fps Performance and 4K 40fps Balanced modes are also available for The Callisto Protocol.

The Callisto Protocol has received a big update that implements PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements for the sci-fi survival horror game. PS5 Pro users can now expect higher resolutions, dramatically improved ray tracing capabilities, and even an 8K mode when playing The Callisto Protocol.

Helmed by Glen Schofield, The Callisto Protocol launched in late 2022 as an indirect spiritual successor to EA’s Dead Space, which Schofield also directed. The game accrued praise for its striking visuals and sci-fi horror atmosphere, but a sudden release window mandate from publisher Krafton severely impacted The Callisto Protocol‘s state at launch. Lukewarm critical reception and the launch of the Dead Space remake just one month later didn’t help matters either, and The Callisto Protocol ultimately missed sales expectations.

[REDACTED] is aiming to be everything The Callisto Protocol wasn’t and to do so it needs to ensure that its rival NPCs don’t share too much in common.

Regardless, developer Striking Distance Studios continues to work on The Callisto Protocol. The latest update for The Callisto Protocol adds it to the ever-expanding list of PS5 Pro enhanced games, as per a new tweet from Striking Distance Studios. The headliner of this update is a new quality mode that outputs 8K resolution and runs at 30fps with ray tracing enabled. Impressively, full ray tracing is featured in every PS5 Pro mode for The Callisto Protocol.

The Callisto Protocol PS5 Pro Graphics Modes

  • Quality Mode: 30FPS at 8K with Full RTX
  • Performance Mode: 60FPS at 4K with Full RTX
  • Balanced Mode: 40FPS at 4K with Full RTX

The list of 8K-supported games on the PS5 Pro continues to grow with The Callisto Protocol, although it’s worth mentioning that Striking Distance Studios is upscaling from a 6K base resolution using the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. For players who prefer a smoother framerate, The Callisto Protocol offers a 60fps mode that outputs a 4K image (possibly upscaled from a lower resolution) on the PS5 Pro as well. There’s also a Balanced mode that targets 40fps at 4K, which is likely native resolution for players who value image quality at a framerate greater than 30fps.

The Callisto Protocol wasn’t a financial trailblazer, but the game’s PS5 Pro enhancements seem quite compelling for players looking to dive in for the first time or even replay the sci-fi survival horror title. Striking Distance Studios also confirmed that it’s working on PS5 Pro support for its latest game [REDACTED], an isometric roguelike shooter which looks starkly different compared to The Callisto Protocol, but is set in the same universe.
