Superman director James Gunn is already considering his next DCU movie. According to the DC Studios boss, he has more than a few options to choose from.
Superman launches Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU) franchise when it opens in theaters next summer. Although the animated series Creature Commandos is the first DCU project being released, Gunn has said he considers that show to be a “little nibble” of what to expect from the DCU while Superman is the true start of the franchise. With Superman now in post-production, Gunn is hard at work seeing the film through to the finish line. However, Gunn is already contemplating the next DCU movie he’ll direct.

The Andor season 2 release date on Disney Plus was announced, along with details on how the story will lead into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
During an interview with Collider, Gunn was asked if he’d chosen his next DCU project. The DC Studios boss admitted he hadn’t yet, but revealed that there are multiple DCU projects on his radar. While Gunn didn’t provide details on these projects, he did explain how he’ll decide which one to direct himself:
“I’ve got like four different things that I could do, and I’m going to kind of jump back and forth between those things. I’m going to see which one really speaks to me, and that’s the one I’m gonna do.”
While there may be some DCU projects that haven’t been announced or reported on, fans know about a handful of developing movies and shows that could be one of the four options he mentioned. The Authority movie, an untitled Bane and Deathstroke movie, and a Teen Titans film are reportedly in development without an announced writer or director. Superman stars María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, whose inclusion will presumably set the stage for The Authority movie. So, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for Gunn to sit in the director’s chair for The Authority movie considering he’ll already be familiar with one of its characters. Of course, this is purely speculative, as Gunn could just as likely choose an entirely different movie to direct.
The DCU’s future could also change depending on how Superman performs. The DCEU features more than a few films that underperformed at the box office and as the franchise progressed, Warner Bros. opted to make each project more standalone. The studio seemingly felt the DC movie and TV franchise was lagging behind Marvel Studios’ MCU, and it wasn’t long after Discovery and WarnerMedia merged into Warner Bros. Discovery that the company decided to overhaul the DC movies with Gunn as the new creative mastermind.
Fans have their wishlist for the DCU Superman movie, but Warner Bros. undoubtedly wants a box office hit and likely some critical praise to justify investing in Gunn’s vision. If Superman suffers the same fate as many recent comic book movies by underperforming at the box office, Warner Bros. may force Gunn to return to the drawing board. Time will tell, but there’s likely a lot riding on Gunn’s Superman.
Superman is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
