An industry insider has shared promising news surrounding the next Battlefield game, claiming that publisher EA is holding some of the series’ biggest playtests to date. According to the report, the upcoming installment in EA and DICE’s popular Battlefield franchise is undergoing multiple playtests, which reportedly vary from smaller feedback sessions to large-scale player tests.

While Battlefield is often considered to be one of the greatest first-person shooter franchises of all time, 2021’s Battlefield 2042 was considered a monumental failure for both publisher EA and developer DICE, at least in terms of player reception. Although numerous content updates and hotfixes have brought the game to a much higher standard than when it first launched, Battlefield 2042‘s release was met with a barrage of negative user reviews. Criticism for the latest Battlefield game was varied, but many die-hard fans of the series felt as though 2042 was a step back for the franchise, with missing features and a plethora of bugs and glitches.

Battlefield 6 Reportedly Undergoing Massive Playtests

Despite the negative reviews, Battlefield 2042 reportedly had strong launch sales, but EA still appears to be committed to righting its wrongs as a new report from InsiderGaming suggests that the studio is hosting massive playtests for the next entry. According to the report, an inside source has revealed that playtests with external players are “happening much more frequently than in past installments.” It was also stated that the amount of data and feedback being collected from these playtests, which range from small to large-scale sessions, is some of the most the franchise has seen in its history. This is, obviously, great news for Battlefield fans, as 2042 saw a much more positive response from its player base when it took on board fan feedback and implemented features such as the highly-requested scoreboard.


While details on the next Battlefield game are currently sparse, EA did divulge some information back in September, revealing that Battlefield 6 is taking the series back to its roots, with what appears to be heavy inspiration from Battlefield 3 and 4. Due to fan feedback from 2042, it was also confirmed by EA General Manager Vince Zampella that the large-scale 128-player maps would not be returning. Zampella noted in an interview with IGN that he would “rather have nice, dense…well-designed play spaces.”

This wasn’t the first time that EA had attempted to hype up the next Battlefield game either. Prior to the reveal of the aforementioned details, EA CEO Andrew Wilson briefly touched upon Battlefield 6 during a financial earnings report, calling the new installment one of EA’s top priorities. Wilson also stated that the next Battlefield game is one of the most ambitious projects in the history of EA.
