Audiences are excited about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, but despite the hype, it is doomed to fail.

Harry Potter Fans Don’t Want A Beat-For-Beat Adaptation

Harry Potter fans love the story that J.K. Rowling created, which is why the books sold so many copies and the movies performed so well at the box office. However, that doesn’t mean that fans want a third version of the same story told beat-for-beat, especially since HBO has the luxury of a longer format via television.

Harry Potter is a detailed franchise with countless characters and amazing settings and locations that can easily be explored in more depth. Given how the story is set out, there is tons of space to freshen things up and provide audiences with new content, which will be necessary for its success. The TV show will inevitably be compared to the movies, so if HBO wants to ensure they’re different, creating something fresh would do that. Fans are excited about anything new from the world of Harry Potter, and that’s because they’re so invested in the franchise that they want something else to keep them hooked.

The success of Hogwarts Legacy, with the video game being a massive hit, proves that. The plot told a completely new story, and Potterheads lapped it up, highlighting a demand for and excitement for new stories from within this world. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad confirmed to Variety that the developers of Hogwarts Legacy 2 are working hard to connect the story with the upcoming HBO series. This could be a sign that something unique will be coming in terms of story.

The Harry Potter World Lends Itself To Creativity

The fantasy genre is arguably the best for creativity because there truly are no rules, especially in a world that blends magic and ordinary life. The scriptwriters have many characters and storylines that they can take from the books, including some that were never part of the movies.

But all of those can be tweaked and enhanced to take them to the next level and create an even more magical experience. Showcasing brand-new lessons inside Hogwarts or creating fresh creatures for Harry Potter and friends to meet would allow the TV show to have its own unique look and feel. Even outside of Hogwarts, there are tons of opportunities. During the Goblet of Fire, the show could look at the other schools from the wizarding world, giving a completely different location that hasn’t been explored before.

The Forbidden Forest is another area the series could delve into, giving us further beasts or creatures to understand. Focusing more on characters with nothing to do with the school setting would also be an opportunity for the series. This fantasy world is one of the most exciting and detailed ever created, and while the movies did a great job of showcasing it, HBO can take things to a whole other level.

More Time Should Lead To More Opportunities With Secondary Characters

When it comes to the main characters, the HBO series is very likely to stick with the tried-and-true story. There are obviously certain beats that need to be hit because audiences are going to expect and demand specific moments to be included, and the overall story will mean they’re needed as well. When it comes to Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, there isn’t much wiggle room for creativity due to how much time their storylines will dictate. However, with the secondary characters, there could be more freedom to explore within this series.

With the longer television format, there is extra time to fill, and HBO should take full advantage of that. Rather than trying to drag certain moments on and squeeze extra content out of the major storylines, the show should explore brand new characters, such as students fans haven’t seen before or different teachers, who could open up new aspects of the magical world.

Expanding the personalities of characters like Luna Lovegood or Lucius Malfoy is something that fans would love to see in the Harry Potter series. It would add further depth to the story, expand the universe for possible future projects, and create a compelling show simultaneously.
