Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Shadowheart Build

Shdowheart is a great healer and addition to the player’s party in BG3.

To get the best out of her, the player should use this build in their playthrough of BG3.

Updated by Rei Penber on November 20, 2024: Lae’zel is an interesting character in BG3 and has a lot to show for when it comes to her strength and abilities. Her default class, the Fighter, is a force to be reckoned with. Players can make use of her to the max using only that class, or they can try dipping into multiclassing to make a magic hybrid with her.

Who Is Lae’zel And Where To Recruit Her

Lae’zel is one of the game’s origin characters, meaning the player has the option to play as her and explore her story in depth. If not, the player can also choose to simply have her as a companion in their roster.

The player will be able to meet Lae’zel extremely early on in the game, specifically in the prologue onboard the Nautiloid Ship. Out of all the companions the player will be able to get, Lae’zel will be the very first they will meet, helping them in their first combat.

After the crash, the player will have to go and find Lae’zel to recruit her to fight with them. The player can find her not too far from where they crashed, and they’ll only need to advance around the waypoint where they’ll find Gale, just before the cathedral ruins.

She will be held in captivity by two Tieflings and the player will get the option to rescue her by various methods, such as fighting the Tiefling or simply deceiving them. Either way, after they’re gone, the player just has to shoot down her cage and she’ll be free. If the player has Shadowheart, she might be against Lae’zel joining, but that shouldn’t stop the player as Lae’zel is truly a powerful unit to have.

Default Lae’zel

Lae’zel was raised ready for a life amongst the stars, mercilessly conquering the cosmos as a githyanki soldier. Grounded, she must deal with a world she doesn’t understand, and find a way to serve her people in a plane that despises her militant kin.

Lae’zel is quite a powerful companion. Hailing from the Githyanki race, a race of heavily militaristic warriors who inhabit the astral plane, she has quite amazing racial traits, such as Astral Knowledge.

When it comes to her class, Lae’zel is a Fighter, which will give her great mastery over weapons and fighting versatility. Her background is the Soldier, which works amazingly well with her class and race. The Soldier background grants her Athletics proficiency, as well as an Intimidation proficiency which can be helpful during conversations, especially since she tends to favor violent dialogue options anyway. She also has proficiencies in Acrobatics and Survival.

Best Lae’zel Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

baldurs-gate-3-laezel-orphic-hammer

When it comes to the best Lae’zel build, the player definitely has a lot of good options, thanks to the versatility of her class.

One of the class features of the Fighter class is the ability to pick a fighting style, which will be available from level 1. The player can choose between Archery, Defense, Dueling, Great Weapon Fighting, Protection, or Two Weapon Fighting. When it comes to them, the best option for Lae’zel is Great Weapon Fighting style. This will allow her to reroll the dice if it lands on a 1 or 2 while she’s using a two-handed melee weapon.

At level 1, she also gets Second Wind. This will allow her to heal herself using a 1d10 +1 dice as a bonus action.

At level 2, she’ll unlock Action Surge. This will allow her to gain an extra action to use in the same turn.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Astarion Build

Astarion is a fan-favorite character from BG3 and here’s his best build.

Level 3 is where things get interesting and the player has the option to pick her subclass. The Fighter class has 3 options: The Battle Master, the Eldritch Knight, and the Champion.

The Battle master will grant her access to Superiority dive and manœuvres which will elevate her fighting.

The Eldritch Knight will allow her to gain access to magic to supplement her physical fighting.

The Champion will give her improved critical hit and eventually an additional fighting style.

The Battle Master and Champion are the main options the player should consider, as Lae’zel’s intelligence isn’t anything to boast about, so her spellcasting will be mediocre at best. Overall, though, the player should go with the Battle Master as it will heavily improve her fighting.

By choosing the Battle Master, Lae’zel will unlock 3 maneuvers and 4 superiority dice (d8), which fuel the maneuvers – all of that at level 3.

Some of the best maneuvers the player can pick include:

  • Disarming Attack. This can disarm an enemy by making them drop their weapon.
  • Trip Attack. This will cause an enemy to become prone, making them unable to do anything and even breaking their concentration.
  • Rally. This will allow her to boost an ally with her superiority die.
  • Commander’s Strike. This allows Lae’zel to command an ally to strike an enemy.
  • Sweeping Attack. Lae’zel can swing her weapon to hit multiple enemies at once.

At levels 4, 6, 8, and 12, Lae’zel will be able to pick feats. Here are some good options for her:

  • Ability Improvement. This will give Lae’zel the option to increase abilities using 2 points. The player should try and increase her constitution by 2.
  • Athlete. This can increase her strength or dexterity by 1. Either works here as Lae’zel can also be equipped with a bow. This also increases her jump distance and makes it easier to stand up when prone.
  • Charger. This gives her Charger: Weapon Attack, which allows her attacks to do more damage, and also Charger: Shove which can shove an enemy.
  • Durable. This increases her constitution by 1 and allows her to heal completely with each short rest.

At level 5, she gets Extra attack. This grants an extra attack after she attacks her enemies with a weapon or even unarmed.

At level 7, she will get an additional superiority die and the possibility to pick 2 new maneuvers, such as:

  • Evasive Footwork. This will give a disadvantage against all melee attacks against her for a turn.
  • Goading attack. The target Lae’zel goads will have a disadvantage when attacking anyone else.

At level 9, she gets Indomitable, allowing her to reroll saving throws whenever she fails.

At level 10, she gets improved combat superiority, turning her d8 superiority dice into d10.

At level 11, she gets yet another 2 manœuvres. Good options are:

  • Riposte. This allows her to hit back when she’s attacked and the attack misses.
  • Precision Attack. This will add the result of the superiority die to the attack roll.

Best Multiclass Build for Lae’zel

lae'zel bg3 main art

Lae’zel is easily one of the most useful characters that the character can deploy on the battlefield, and this is in part thanks to her powerful default class, the Fighter class. This class definitely stands out as one of the best in the game. However, many players will want to experiment with Lae’zel and try to make use of multiclassing, combining multiple classes together.

For this Multiclass for Lae’zel, the purpose will be to make her a character that can both hit hard and cast some powerful spells. However, of course, if the player just wants to make her a heavy melee fighter, then they should just go the fighter and barbarian route. Here, however, the player will be making use of the Fighter class, as well as the Wizard class.

To start off at level 1, Lae’zel will be part of the Fighter class. This will give her the option to choose one of many fighting styles, which includes the following options: archery, defense, shelling, great weapon fighting, protection, and two-weapon fighting. For her, great weapon fighting is the best option. She also gets second wind, a great way to heal herself as a bonus action.

Continuing on to level 2, still as a fighter, she gets action surge. This can allow her to attack one again during her turn, an incredibly useful ability.

At level 3 now as a fighter, she gets to pick a subclass for the fighter class, with her options being Battle Master, Eldritch Knight, and Champion. Here, her best option is undoubtedly the Eldritch Knight, as it will work best with the Wizard class. This will open up for her the Eldritch Knight Spellcasting feature, which uses intelligence to cast spells, which is the same as wizards. She also gets Weapon bond. This will bond Lae’zel’s weapon to her hand, making it impossible to knock it out of her hand, and make the weapon return right back to her when thrown.

Now, moving on to level 4 as a Fighter, she gets to simply choose a feat this turn. There are many feats that would work amazingly with her, but a good option is Savage Attacker.

Now, at level 5 as a Fighter, she receives a great class feature, which is known as Extra Attack, which, as the name implies, allows her to attack one more time per turn. Combined with Action Surge, this can be devastating to enemies.

Lae’zel should now make a switch to the Wizard Class. At level 1 of this class, making her a Fighter 5 – Wizard 1, she will unlock Wizard Spellcasting, as well as Arcane Recovery, which allows her to restore spell slots between combats. The Wizard class will allow her to learn spells from scrolls, an extremely useful ability. Since both the Eldritch Knight and the Wizard use intelligence to cast spells, the switch will be very easy.

Now, at level 2 of the Wizard class, she gets to pick a subclass, and she has many many options, eight to be specific. Out of these, a subclass that will fit her well is the Abjuration subclass, although Evocation works well as well. Now, as an abjuration Wizard, she gets Abjuration Savant, as well as Arcane Ward, the latter allowing her to create a ward around herself by casting abjuration spells, and gets stronger the higher level abjuration spells she casts.

Continuing to level 3 of the Wizard class, making her a Fighter 5 – Wizard 3 character, she gets an additional Arcane recovery, but that’s about it for this level up.

Now at level 4, she gets to choose a feat yet again. With many options that could work for her, a good recommendation would be the Mage Slayer feat. She also gets an additional Wizard cantrip. Here, it really depends on what the player likes, and most are valid options, a good one, for example, being Ray of Frost.

Now to end the Wizard class, at level 5, making Fighter 5 – Wizard 5 character, she will get, yet again, another Arcane charge. This will definitely be useful to restore spells in between combats for her.

Now, the player needs to switch back to her original class, the Fighter class, making her a Fighter 6 – Wizard 5. Immediately upon returning, she will be at level 6 of the class, which grants her another feat. Martial Adept can be an interesting choice here, as it gives her access to two maneuvers, something from the Battle Master subclass of the fighter. These will be useful for her and she can go with disarming attack and precision attack.

Now finally, to end this, she will reach level 7 of the Fighter class, finally making her a Fighter 7 – Wizard 5 character. Now, this last level-up will give her a subclass feature, with this one being not just the level 2 Eldritch Knight Spellcasting but also, more interestingly, the War Magic feature. This will allow Lae’zel to make a weapon attack as a bonus action after casting a cantrip.
