WoW Classic: What To Do First

World of Warcraft Classic gives players the opportunity to experience earlier iterations of the game. Not only that, but there are several different variants from players to choose from. Whether it is the progressive server, the Era servers, Season of Discovery, or even the dreaded Hardcore server, World of Warcraft Classic allows players to turn back the clock and experience the earlier days of the popular MMORPG.

But even in the early days when there was just Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, World of Warcraft can be a daunting game for players to get into. Before you begin your journey to Level 60, there are several things that you should make sure to keep in mind so that you avoid making costly mistakes.

Loot Everything

Killing hostile mobs is something that you’ll be doing a lot of in World of Warcraft. Not only is that how you complete a lot of quests in the game, but you also get EXP if the mob you killed is within your level range. More often than not, mobs will have loot that you can claim once you’ve killed them. Loot can vary from money to equipment, but you will also encounter gray quality junk items. You may be tempted to just ignore these items and move on, but you should get into the habit of looting everything a mob has on it.

The reason for this is that gray quality junk items are a great source of money early on when you have less than a silver to your name. Whether it is copper, silver, or gold, money is much more difficult to get in vanilla World of Warcraft than it is in retail. The more junk you sell, the more money you will have, which will allow you to be more prepared for the dangers that lie ahead. Besides, when you are under Level 10 you have a pretty good chance of getting armor/weapon upgrades every time you kill a mob.

Purchase or Craft Bags ASAP

Another thing that will benefit you early on into your journey across Azeroth is more inventory space. In order to carry more stuff (reagents, potions, bandages, etc) you will need more bags. At the start, you will have one bag and that is it. While this is fine for your first couple of levels, you will need more inventory space by the time you leave the starting area. You will typically find bag vendors in any major city, so make sure to pay one a visit as soon as possible.

Vendors always sell the following bags:

  • Small Brown Pouch (5 silver)
  • Brown Leather Satchel (25 silver)
  • Heavey Brown Bag (2 gold)

These three bags give you six, eight, and 10 extra inventory slots. Players with the Tailoring profession can also make their own bags, and there is always the option to purchase them from the Auction House if you can afford to do so. Having more inventory space means having to spend less time running back to a vendor to free up space.

Visit Your Class Trainer Regularly

While Class Trainers no longer have a purpose in retail World of Warcraft, they are absolutely essential in vanilla WoW. By visiting a Class Trainer, you can learn new abilities as you level up along with learning new ranks for abilities to make them even stronger.

As you level up, you will even occasionally get class quests as well. As you level up, purchasing new abilities will become increasingly more expensive. For that reason, you will want to set some money aside as keeping up with your abilities and improving their ranks is crucial for your adventures.

Learn Professions

While selling junk and soulbound gear you don’t need anymore is a good source of money in World of Warcraft Classic, it will not be enough as things get more expensive. Eventually, new abilities will begin to cost gold rather than silver. Not to mention you will need a small fortune just to be able to purchase the riding skill along with a mount.

This is why you want to learn professions. Aside from the secondary professions like Cooking, First Aid, and Fishing, there are nine primary professions in World of Warcraft Classic and you can learn two of them. The professions are as follows:

  • Alchemy
  • Blacksmithing
  • Enchanting
  • Engineering
  • Herbalism
  • Mining
  • Leatherworking
  • Skinning
  • Tailoring

Of these professions, Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning are great professions since they involve just gathering materials from the world. You can gather herb, ore, or leather from enemies you kill and sell it on the Auction House for money. Alternatively, you can try to sell items you make with the other professions, though there will be significantly more competition along with costs for materials that will eat into your profits.

Money aside, leveling a profession while leveling your character can also grant you access to helpful items. For example, leveling Alchemy means you will have potions and elixirs that can give you an edge in battle.
