Among the varied professions that players can learn and practice in World of Warcraft: The War Within, Herbalism is a useful gathering profession that has been in World of Warcraft right from the start. In The War Within’s setting of Khaz Algar, herbalist players can learn to gather the flora of the land, and harness their power for production professions.

The herbs native to Khaz Algar; Mycobloom, Luredrop, Blessing Blossom, Orbinid, and Arathor’s Spear; are useful to the alchemists, scribes, and even chefs of the subcontinent. Other, more mystical, resources obtained from versions of these herbs are useful to the game’s other professions as well.

Herbs Of Khaz Algar
Five harvestable herbs are native to the lands of Khaz Algar.
They are:
- Mycobloom, a very common fungus.
- Blessing Blossom, a fairly common flower.
- Arathor’s Spear, a fairly common fern-like plant.
- Luredrop, an uncommon carnivorous plant.
- Orbinid, a rare purple bloom.
Additionally, there are six variants of each herb that yield extra resources when gathered and interact with your character in different ways. Herbalists trained in the herbology of Khaz Algar can also learn to Overload Empowered Herbs, allowing them to uncover the full potential of these variant herbs.
These are:
- Lush herbs, which give herbalists more of the specific herb when gathered.
- Irradiated herbs, which give herbalists Leyline Residue when gathered.
- Crystallized herbs, which give herbalists Crystalline Powder when gathered.
- Sporefused herbs, which give herbalists Viridescent Spores when gathered.
- Altered herbs, which give herbalists Writhing Samples when gathered.
- Camouflaged herbs, which are usually invisible and require the use of a Phial of Truesight to see.
Mycobloom
Mycobloom is the most common Algari herb that herbalists will encounter. It is found in virtually every environment of every Khaz Algar zone, with no preference for where it grows.
Besides its use in Alchemy and Inscription, Mycobloom is also used in Khaz Algar Cooking recipes.
Blessing Blossom
Although not as common as Mycobloom, Blessing Blossom is still fairly common throughout Khaz Algar. It tends to be more specific in the spaces it spawns, seeming to prefer the grassy spots of the Ringing Deeps and Hallowfall and atop the stone spires of the Isle of Dorn.
Arathor’s Spear
Arathor’s Spear is not a rare Algari herb, but it can be a bit elusive to find. It grows mainly at the base of trees in bright, outdoor areas, mostly being found in Hallowfall and the Isle of Dorn.
While it is used as a base Alchemy ingredient and used to mill inks for scribes, it is also useful for scribes and leatherworkers for its woody stems, used to make staves and bows.
Luredrop
An uncommon to rare herb, depending on where in Khaz Algar you are, Luredrop prefers to grow in underground areas. Even in the underground zones of Khaz Algar, this plant seems to prefer Azj-Kahet and the Ringing Deeps, as its bioluminescence lets it thrive in the dark.
Orbinid
The rarest herb of Khaz Algar, Orbinid prefers to grow in the deepest and darkest regions of the subcontinent. It is most often found in Azj-Kahet; even the caves of Hallowfall and the Isle of Dorn can sometimes harbor this resource.
Lush Herbs
Based on visuals, Lush herb nodes are larger versions of their normal counterparts. While most variant herbs can be overloaded to gain some hidden effect, Lush herbs cannot be overloaded. Instead, they simply always grant more of their respective herb when harvested.
Irradiated Herbs
Irradiated herbs are flora that have been affected by the arcane energy that seeped into the ground of Khaz Algar in the wake of Dalaran’s destruction on its shores.
With a purple glow, Irradiated herbs will knock you back and into the air after being harvested, which could be deadly if you find them growing high up somewhere.
In addition to collecting the respective herb of an Irradiated node, herbalists will also harvest Leyline Residue, another useful profession ingredient.
When overloading Irradiated herbs, you will be able to duplicate another herb for a limited amount of time after overloading it. You can use your duplication effect on any herb you come across, making an exact copy of it to be harvested.
Crystallized Herbs
Some herbs are affected by the strong presence of the Worldsoul’s energy in Khaz Algar, causing them to Crystallize. Crystallized herbs provide the herbalist harvesting them with Crystalline Powder, on top of the respective herb type that they are.
These geodic plants with a sparkly yellow glow will also grant you a small blessing for a short while after harvesting them.
When overloading Crystallized herb nodes, a portal appears next to the herb, leading the herbalist who enters it to another nearby herb.
Sporefused Herbs
A magical spore propagates through the lands of Khaz Algar. It can sometimes fuse to the herbs of the land, making them Sporefused.
While emanating a green glow, these variant herbs will grant an herbalist Viridescent Spores upon harvesting them.
Additionally, after harvesting them, residual spores will follow and pop around you for a short while, inflicting minor damage to you should mini-explosions hit you.
Overloading Sporefused herbs causes four new herb nodes to spawn nearby, but beware, three of them are hallucinations. Pick the odd one out, and you will collect some of that Sporelusive herb node.
Altered Herbs
The most dangerous of the variant herbs of Khaz Algar, Altered herbs are afflicted by the noxious darkness of the Black Blood of the Old Gods that seeps through the depths of the subcontinent.
These shadowy plants inflict a deadly poison upon those who harvest them, but as the rarest variant herb, harvesting them awards brave herbalists with the rare Writhing Sample profession reagent.
Overloading these volatile herb nodes will summon a hostile Twisted Lasher elemental mob, which, while destroying the Altered herb, will provide the herbalist with a greater number of Writhing Samples should they be able to defeat the Twisted Lasher.
Camouflaged Herbs
Camouflaged herbs are possibly the strangest of the Algari variant herbs. Unless you are an alchemist who has made a Phial of Truesight and drunk it, or if one has made one for you, you may never encounter these herb nodes.
Usually invisible, Camouflaged herbs cannot be overloaded, nor do they award an herbalist with extra herbs. They are, however, a useful extra source of herbs for those with access to Phials of Truesight.
Khaz Algar Herbalism Specializations
Khaz Algar herbology has its own set of specializations for herbalists to choose from. Each one boosts an herbalist’s skill in certain sections of their profession and is unlocked and expanded upon through Khaz Algar Herbalism Knowledge.
They are:
- Bountiful Harvests
- Botany
- Overloading the Underground
Bountiful Harvests
Bountiful Harvests is the specialization for herbalists who want to get the most out of every herb node that they harvest. This means that it generally boosts a herbalist’s skill in harvesting the most herbs out of the nodes they encounter.
This specialization has a sub-specialization for every Algari herb, that suitably increases the skill of those specific herbs when unlocked and played into.
Botany
The Botany specialization focuses on reusing parts of the herbs gathered by an herbalist, allowing them to grow their own and nourish herb nodes they find to increase their quality and quantity when harvested.
This specialization’s two sub-specializations focus on making mulch and collecting and planting Verdant Seeds, respectively.
Mulch allows an herbalist to nourish and buff herbs they find out in the world, increasing the likelihood of those nodes providing more and higher quality herbs when harvested.
Verdant Seeds are items that can sometimes be collected when harvesting herbs, and can be planted in spots of Rich Soil on the farmland of Beledar’s Bounty in southern Hallowfall. When planted, these seeds instantly grow into random herb nodes of any Algari herb.
Overloading The Underground
Overloading the Underground is the specialization for herbalists who want to manipulate the empowered forces of Khaz Algar to extract as many resources as they can from variant herbs.
Additionally, herbalists who specialize in this can become resistant or immune to the more detrimental effects of empowered variant herbs, and increase the power or duration of beneficial effects of these herb nodes.
The four sub-specializations of Overloading the Underground focus on the four variant herbs that can be overloaded; Altered, Crystallized, Irradiated, and Sporefused.
