Key Takeaways

  • Evilus, an organization in DanMachi, aimed to spread fear and chaos in Orario during the dark age.
  • Evilus had a decentralized structure, making it difficult to eradicate despite key defeats.
  • Although Evilus was destroyed, remnants remain, posing a potential threat to Orario’s future stability.

In the world of DanMachi, Orario stands as a city that hosts adventurers, gods, and Familias, with the primary aim of protecting the city from the monsters in the dungeon. However, there was a horde of beings who desired the very opposite, gathering to form an organization known as Evilus. In DanMachi, Evilus is an organization that stands against the very notion of peace. An organization composed of multiple Familias who want nothing but to sow seeds of terror and destroy the sanctity of Orario. Taking advantage of the fall of the Zeus and the Hera Familias, they turned Orario upside down, fighting against the guild for control of the city. Now a defeated organization, they still have members spread around in different parts of Orario and beyond, and they might just rise again.

The Origin

Rise Of Evilus

The terror-causing organization Evilus had existed for a very long time since they contributed to the construction of Knossos, the artificial underground labyrinth. When the gods descended to the mortal plane, some came down not to bond with humans but to cause havoc, and they found mortals who had the same intentions. Gods like Thanatos and Electo came together to form a coalition of Familias with the goal of spreading fear. However, where there was evil, there was also good, and the good were in a much stronger position. The Zeus and Hera Familia were essentially the peacekeepers around this period so Evilus could not make any bold moves or they would be destroyed.

To battle this inconvenience, they planted themselves in different environments in Orario. They had several members amid adventurers, merchants, and even civilians, a large information and resource network that supplied their needs. So when the Zeus and Hera Familias were rendered inactive after their battle with the One-Eyed Black Dragon, it was no surprise that Evilus took advantage of this lack of enforcers and started wreaking havoc properly, leading to the Dark Age era of Orario.

The Dark Age

Since the Familias who kept the peace of Orario were no more, Evilus was able to finally unleash their true strength, fighting the guild for control of Orario for about 10 years. These 10 years were truly one of the darkest times for Orario as everyone was on the receiving end of this violence. Even the civilians were not spared from it. Evilus had been trying to take over Orario by weakening them from within, and they spared no expense, taking the most drastic measures for the fun of it. The worst part was that they were everywhere, and they knew nearly everything. With them amidst the people of Orario, distrust was at its highest as you could never know who was watching. Even today, Orario is still scarred by this era, taking the appropriate measures to make sure they are not infiltrated like they were and constantly watching out for anything suspicious.

Structure Of Evilus

A Decentralised Organization

During war, it is a common strategy to take out the leader first, as that always destabilizes the rest of the troops, hence guaranteeing victory. This is a weakness Evilus did not have. Despite containing a lot of Familias, they did not have a true leader. Since the purpose of their gathering was to havoc, it became the standard that those who caused the most havoc and were seen as dangerous were the ones who were leading the organization. At the time, there were three Familias who shared these attributes – the Thanatos Familia, the Electo Familia, and the Apate Familia. These three Familias, with powerful adventurers led by powerful dangerous gods, were the core of Evilus. Even the strongest adventurers in Orario had a tough time with this lot.

Although they were powerful as an organization without a true leader, this was not their main strength. Their main strength lay in their infiltration of society. Evilus’s ability to infiltrate various sectors of Orario and beyond allowed them to gather information and resources that allowed them to further their agenda with efficiency. As they blended in with the people of Orario, they sowed seeds of distrust amongst the masses, making it difficult for the peacekeepers to identify them and obstruct their plans. This also made the people of Orario paranoid as they could never really tell who was who. This, combined with their decentralized nature, made recovery after suffering losses easy for them as the fall of one Familia, no matter which one, was not the end of their agenda.

The Fall Of Evilus

End Of The Dark Age

While the Dark Age lasted for a very long time, Evilus did not come out of it as victors even with their structure and information network. Seven years from the current timeline, the Freya Familia launched an all-out attack on the Electo and Apate Familias. These two core groups of Evilus suffered heavy casualties, as they were barely a match for the Freya Familia. A few members managed to survive this battle and went underground in hiding, hoping to recover and strike again. However, they also were destroyed by the captain of the Loki Familia; Finn, who led clean-up operations to completely wipe out the remnants of these core Familias and ensure that would not recover this time.

Five years before the main story, the violence-inciting organization was finally brought down by Ryuu Lion, a former member of the Astrea Familia. After her family was massacred by the Rudra Familia in Evilus, Ryuu went on a personal rampage and was able to single-handedly destroy the entire Familia and avenge her family, dealing Evilus an extremely heavy blow in the process. This eventually led to the end of the Dark Age, leaving only a few members of Evilus, who could not do anything of significance, scattered around Orario and beyond, allowing Orario to heal from the bloodshed of the past ten years.

The Future of Evilus in Orario

The Resurgence of Evilus?

the labyrinth city

The decimation of Evilus was a major victory for Orario, bringing an end to one of the darkest eras of the city and allowing Familias like the Loki and Hestia Familia to flourish in a much more stable environment. However, the seeds sown by Evilus were not completely uprooted. Even though the organization itself does not exist anymore, there are still remnants of them scattered all over the world, still operating in the shadows. This could potentially lead to another set of Familias, stronger than ever, forming an organization like Evilus and plunging Orario into despair once more.

If this were to happen, Orario could be in severe danger. Even with their absence, Orario already faces threats from Evilus’s foreign allies who are anti-Orario. The most worrisome aspect is their contribution to the Knossos. This Labyrinth could very well be their path to a new assault. If remnants of Evilus were to reclaim the labyrinth and make use of the hidden passages, they could infiltrate Orario without being detected and launch attacks from the inside. Should Evilus rise again, with their vast network, hidden allies, and Knossos, the damage that would be done to Orario would be near irredeemable, forever changing Orario.
