The ‘downside’ to this card is that you get to give an opponent two Treasure tokens, which under any other circumstance would be bad, since giving your opponent mana isn’t great. But that mana is temporary, and whatever big spell they cast, you can just counter anyway.

Boltwave is a sorcery spell that deals three damage to each opponent. This puts it practically on par with Lightning Bolt, though losing the instant speed timing and being only able to target your opponent really does a lot to diminish the power of the card. Still, being able to take out a good chunk of your opponent’s life with just one red mana is pretty darn good.

Another deck archetype that got some boost in Foundations are Angels, and no doubt that over the next several sets this deck will remain a strong contender in the meta. Angel of Vitality plays a vital role in the deck, acting as a huge anthem and rewarding your life-gain strategy.

Any time you would gain life, you gain one more of that amount, which isn’t a ton, but adds up over time. Then, once you hit 25 or more life, Angel of Vitality gets a bonus +2/+2, turning her into a 4/4 with flying, which can take down your opponent in just a few short turns.

Angel decks get another boon with Youthful Valkyrie, an exceptionally solid card that grows bigger and bigger the longer the game goes on. For just two mana, you get a 1/3 Angel with flying and an ability that can keep it in the game for a long while.

Anytime another Angel you control enters the battlefield you get to put a +1/+1 counter on Youthful Valkyrie. While this starts off small, it won’t be a huge threat to your opponents for a few turns still, letting you get a few smaller hits in and saving your more threatening creatures from removal spells later in the game.

A surprisingly powerful card, Bolt Bend hasn’t been seen since 2019’s War of the Spark set, and while it isn’t the most valuable card from the set, it has slowly climbed up more and more since the set stopped being printed.

With a reprint in Foundations, Bolt Bend is not only back in Standard, but now a bit easier to pick up. The spell lets you change the target of a spell or ability with another target. While it costs four mana to cast normally, you can drop it down to just one red mana if you have a creature out with power four or more.

Biogenic Upgrade

Uncommon – $3.29

Counter strategies are a very fun deck to build, and Biogenic Upgrade gives you a neat way to let those counters spiral out of control. While it does cost six mana, Biogenic Upgrade can give you a near-endless supply of tokens.

You get to deal out three +1/+1 counters to up to three different creatures, then double the number of +1/+1 counters on those creatures. You can take a creature with just two counters on it to four, putting it above what your opponent would consider to be fair trade when you move to combat, leaving them with not many choices on what to do.

Twinblade Paladin

Uncommon – $3.53

Twinblade Paladin is another card that hasn’t been seen for quite some time, last printed in Core Set 202, but returning in Foundations with a strong standing. This four-mana Human Knight gets a +1/+1 counter anytime you gain life.

Once you hit 25 or more life, Twinblade Paladin gets double strike, letting you deal out a ton of damage in just a few turns if you play it on turn four, or earlier if you have a little ramp. Keep the pressure up with some other Human strategies, and you’ll have a very strong deck on your hands.
